The 32-year-old midfielder missed last weekend's Bundesliga game against Wolfsburg and the club confirmed he will again be absent indefinitely.

Irvine suffered a flare-up of the same stress-related injury that kept him out of action for more than six months, with Irvine returning only in October from a 195-day absence.

He played a limited role in Australia's pre-World Cup friendlies against Colombia and Venezuela in November but was instrumental in Tony Popovic's side securing qualification, scoring three goals in two Player of the Match performances against China and Indonesia in March 2025.

Surgery was needed on the same foot injury in April, sparking concerns that a repeat operation may need a six-month recovery.

It is yet to be confirmed whether Irvine will need surgery a second time, but St. Pauli announced during the week that Irvine will be out "until further notice", with the "next steps being discussed by all the parties involved"

Irvine's injury is also a bitter blow to the survival hopes of St. Pauli, who head into the weekend in the relegation zone after winning only three of their first 16 games.
