A horror piece of defending from Inacio Miguel gifted a late goal to hosts Al Masry, who defeated Kaizer Chiefs 2-1 in their CAF Confederation Cup Group D fixture on Sunday.

Chiefs levelled the game just past the hour mark and looked the most likely to win it, until Miguel’s moment of madness saw them concede with three minutes to go.

Chances were few and far between in the first half, with Chiefs goalkeeper Brandon Petersen sticking out a boot to cut out a low cross in the best chance for the home side.

Bradley Cross made an excellent block seven yards from goal in another rare Masry attempt. There was very little from a Chiefs perspective as they battled to create opportunities in what was largely a defensive display.

The home side received a penalty just before the hour mark when Petersen committed a foul as he raced off his line to intercept a pass but missed the ball and took down the Al Masry player.

There could be few arguments over the award, and the spot kick was converted by Rwanda international Bonheur Mugisha, who played the full 90 minutes when his national team lost 3-0 to Bafana Bafana in a 2026 World Cup qualifier last month.

Given they had failed to break down the Masry defence for more than an hour, it was going to take something special for Chiefs to score and Dillon Solomons provided it.

The right-back picked up the ball 30 yards from goal, cut inside and beat two defenders before firing a low shot with his left foot into the bottom corner, giving the goalkeeper no chance.

It was an expert run and finish in just a fifth appearance of the season for the little-used Solomons, making it a sweet moment as he scored his first goal in more than three years.

Chiefs had looked the most likely to go on and win it until they conceded a terrible goal from a corner.

Defender Miguel had a simple clearance as the ball fell to him but completely missed the ball, allowing Masry centre-back Mohamed Hashem to poke it into the net. It was a disastrous moment from the experienced defender and cost his side a point.

The match was the first ever in the group stages of the Confederation Cup for Chiefs, and just their second group phase in any African club competition.

When you consider Mamelodi Sundowns are appearing for the 11th time in a row in the CAF Champions League group phase, it shows how far behind the Amakhosi are in continental competition.

For the record, their other pool phase appearance came in the Champions League in 2020/21 when they reached the final but lost to Al Ahly.

They advanced from their pool with nine points, having met Wydad Casablanca of Morocco, Horoya of Guinea and Angola’s Petro Atletico.
