Benfica manager Jose Mourinho believes his side do not need a miracle to knock Real Madrid out of the Champions League as the two sides prepare to do battle in the Champions League play-off first-leg on Tuesday.

The Portuguese side qualified in spectacular fashion from the League Phase, as goalkeeper Anatoliy Trubin headed them to a 4-2 victory over Real to send them through on goal difference.

That 'miracle' lit up the final matchday, but the former Madrid manager feels his side doesn't need another one to progress.

Speaking ahead of the match, Mourinho said: "I don't think Benfica needs a miracle to eliminate Real Madrid. We need to be at our absolute best, almost perfect. Of course, Real Madrid is Real Madrid: history, know-how, ambition... there's no point comparing. The only thing you can compare is that Real Madrid is huge and Benfica is huge. Other than that, there's nothing else that's comparable. But football has this power, and we can win."

He added: "I'm expecting to face the number one contender to win the Champions League. Obviously, I expect an opponent similar to the one we saw after the Lisbon match, where the coach was able to understand a few things, change the team's structure, and turn an unexpected defeat into three straight league wins."

The Liga Portugal side were given a boost before the clash, as Mourinho confirmed Amar Dedic and Fredrik Aursnes will be part of his plans. Dedic has missed their last four games, whilst Aursnes missed their most recent win over Santa Clara.

Mourinho explained: "I can confirm both are available. There's still a training session tomorrow morning, so something unexpected could happen, but based on what I saw yesterday and today, they're fit. Starters? That's my plan: either they start, or they're not even on the bench."

Given his longevity in the game, Mourinho has history with a lot of clubs, but arguably none bigger than with Real Madrid. He spent three years in charge at the Bernabeu, where he led them to one LaLiga and one Copa del Rey title.

Speaking about his relationship with the club, he said: "I gave everything to Real Madrid. I did good things and bad things, but I gave absolutely everything. When a professional leaves a club with those feelings, there's a bond that lasts forever. I left 12 years ago, and I've always felt from Madrid fans the same as I feel for them.

"They know I gave everything, that I made mistakes, but they respect me. But I don't want to feed stories that aren't real. I have another year on my contract with Benfica. It's a special contract, signed during an election period, with a simple clause for either side to terminate.

"There's nothing with Real Madrid. I'd love to knock Real Madrid out, but I'd also love to see Alvaro (Arbeloa, manager) win the league and stay at the club for many years. He's a very capable coach, with a lot of Madrid spirit and the personality to manage Real Madrid, which isn't for everyone."

Asked what could be the difference in the encounter, Mourinho answered: "Beating Real Madrid once is already very hard, beating them twice is even harder, and three times is harder still. I know what it's like to face a big team that's been wounded, because I've been lucky enough to coach great clubs.

"But the most important thing is motivation: their goal is to win the Champions League, and that could give them even more strength. On the other hand, we know this game won't be a repeat of the last one, and they've made important progress.

"What I asked my players is to play with joy for being here. It's better to play here against the great Real Madrid than against a lesser team. Let's enjoy tomorrow's game and hope for a result that lets us fight for the tie in Madrid. No pressure."
