How Lampard is restoring his reputation at Coventry as Wilshere & Ramsey dip into management

Although Frank Lampard's stock as a manager had gone through the floor after a frankly embarrassing caretaker-manager tenure at Chelsea, as well as an unsuccessful spell at Everton, one has to admire the former England international's bravery in taking the Coventry City job earlier this season.

Lampard, 46, was on a hiding to nothing given that the Sky Blues had, at that point (November 28, 2024), played 17 games but were languishing in 17th position in the Championship having won just four games.

Two points above the drop zone meant that stabilising things on the pitch would be the order of the day, with no real thoughts of anything more than that in 2024/25.

Fast-forward to the present day, and Coventry - despite losing to bottom-of-the-table Plymouth Argyle at the weekend - find themselves in sixth position and on course for a play-off place.

Frank Lampard's best work has come in the Championship

15 wins since taking over (five draws, nine losses) have given Lampard a win percentage of 51.7 - his joint second-best ever as a manager and only just shy of the 52.7% during his first season at Chelsea.

Playing a brand of football that's been very pleasing on the eye has neatly bypassed the general issue of Lampard not being defensively astute - a current goal difference of +5 isn't anything to write home about - and has put him back in the conversation regarding young English managers working at the highest level of the game in this country.

It shouldn't escape anyone's notice, however, that his best work has come in the Championship rather than the Premier League.

At Derby he was also lauded for the exciting way that the Rams played football and 90 goals scored in his 57 games in charge was the second-highest output of any manager at that club over the past decade.

70 conceded was the third worst, however, and perhaps a sign of things to come defensively.

24 wins, 17 draws and 16 losses for a 42.1% win percentage certainly wasn't disastrous, though a special Play-Off semi-final night at Leeds was about as good as it got, Derby going on to lose the final against Aston Villa.

All downhill after his first season as manager at Chelsea

Of the 94 games he took charge of at Chelsea 45 were wins, giving him a not unimpressive win percentage of 47.9%. However, most of those victories came in the first part of his first stint during 2019-2021.

It was all downhill after that.

Out of work for a year after leaving the Blues, Everton took a chance on him after sacking Rafael Benitez because of a run of poor results.

Keeping the Toffees up was a pre-requisite but this was only achieved in the last knockings of the 2021/22 campaign.

One win in 11 during the first part of the following season saw to it that the former England midfielder would be relieved of his duties on Merseyside.

A record of 12 wins, 24 losses and eight draws in 44 games in his time at Goodison Park - his team scoring 43 and letting in 71 - gave him a win percentage of just 27.3. Only Duncan Ferguson and David Unsworth fared worse in the role over the past 10 years.

If that hadn't put paid to any further employment at the top level, one win and eight defeats in 11 games as caretaker manager back at Stamford Bridge had to have been the nail in the coffin, particularly as Lampard had recorded an utterly embarrassing win percentage of just 9.1%.

However, here we are with Lampard and his Coventry team potentially on the verge of promotion via the Play-Offs if they can win their final two league matches this season and then come good in the pressure cooker environment of the end-of-season showpiece games.

There's a long way to go before that precise scenario occurs, though kudos to Lampard for repairing some of his battered reputation with a solid enough showing this season.

More international midfielders making their way in management

He isn't the only former international midfielder trying to make his way in elite-level management either of course.

Steven Gerrard, after a fabulous time north of the border with Rangers, saw his value as a manager plummet after leaving Aston Villa in a worse position than when he took over.

Not being able to ensure Saudi Pro League side, Al Ettifaq, were able to compete with the top teams there has already cemented an unwanted legacy.

Jack Wilshere at Norwich City and Aaron Ramsey at Cardiff have both recently been installed by their respective clubs until the end of the season to see if there's an upturn in the level of performance.

The former has replaced Johannes Thorup on an interim basis and the latter has taken over from Omer Riza, though Ramsey has suggested he'd prefer to continue playing next season rather than managing.

The Canaries have nothing to play for in mid-table, whilst the Bluebirds arguably need to win both of their remaining Championship games and hope results elsewhere go for them in order to not fall through the relegation trap door.

Ramsey's final game of the season is against Norwich, pitching him against his former Arsenal midfield team-mate in a tantalising clash.

Win that and the 34-year-old Welshman might reconsider his playing aspirations.
