The chance to become the first team from Sweden to reach a European quarter-final since 1994/95 is on offer for Djurgarden, as they travel to Cyprus to face Pafos in the UEFA Conference League (UECL) Round of 16 first leg tonight.

The Stockholm side also have the opportunity to right the wrongs of two years ago, when they were dumped out 5-0 on aggregate by Poland's Lech Poznan the only other time they have reached this stage of the competition.

Jani Honkavaara’s team should be confident of doing so, given that they are on a four-match winning run in the UECL, recovering from a slow start when they picked up one point from their first two league phase outings.

Those wins took them to a fifth-placed finish of the 36 teams in the league phase, bypassing the play-off round.

That form may not count for much, given that the most recent of those wins was against Legia Warsaw on December 19th.

Since then, Djurgarden have played three times in the Svenska Cupen, winning once, drawing once and losing their most recent fixture 4-3 on Saturday at home to Goteborg, gaining match sharpness if nothing else.

But if the form table is little to go by, then the Iron Stoves' away record in Europe should carry some weight as they head to the Limassol Stadium.

Of the 17 away ties Djurgarden have played in the competition's short history, they have won seven, drawn four and lost only three times.

This season, their only loss on the road was in their first qualifying tie, losing 1-0 to Progres Niederkorn which was inconsequential given their 3-0 lead from the home leg.

Since, they have won three and drawn two away in the UECL, including a 2-2 draw with LASK and 1-0 and 2-1 victories over The New Saints and Vikingur Reykjavik, respectively.

Another similar performance tonight will help them put one foot in the Quarter-finals and reach that stage of a major European competition for the first time since the inaugural European Cup in 1955/56.

Back then, the Blue Stripes were beaten home and away by Scottish club Hibernian.

They can also become the first Swedish team to play in the last eight of a European competition since Goteborg lost out to Bayern Munich on away goals in the UEFA Champions League Quarter-finals.

To do so, Djurgarden may need one of their forwards to stamp their authority on the tie.

Eight different players found the net in the league phase, but no one has scored more than the two each managed by Tobias Gulliksen, Deniz Hummet and Tokmac Chol Nguen.

The Swedes out to stop Djurgarden

Trying to stop them will be the Cypriot side who finished 12th in the league phase, only three points behind Djurgarden, on what has been a dream debut European campaign so far.

Pafos sit top of the Cypriot First Division and emphasised their status as the top side on the island in the UECL play-off round, beating compatriots Omonia 3-2 on aggregate.

A 2-1 win in the second leg was their third successive home victory in Europe, having seen off Celje and Astana.

Interestingly, Pafos have two Swedish players in their ranks who could be difference makers in halting their countrymen's progress.

Midfielder Ken Sema has 24 caps for Sweden and moved to Pafos at the end of January from Watford.

He came off the bench in both legs against Omonia and has already made a real impact, providing the assist for Mislav Orsic's late equaliser in the first leg.

Also in the Pafos squad list for tonight's clash is forward Muamer Tankovic, who who five caps for the Blagult from 2014 to 2020.

He may not have found the net in the competition proper, but scored once in each of the three qualifying rounds that Pafos navigated.

The 30-year-old then registered assists against Petrocub and Lugano in the league phase, before adding a third to his tally, setting up Jonathan Silva for the winning goal in the second leg against Omonia.

Both Swedish internationals are dangerous when it comes to link-up play and will pose a real threat to Djurgarden's European adventure.
