The Moroccan football association (FRMF) have reportedly held talks with former FC Barcelona manager Xavi about the reportedly soon-to-be vacant spot of national team manager, The Athletic reported on Wednesday.

Morocco manager Walid Regragui is reportedly set to leave his position after facing criticism about his style of play and failing to win either of the last African Cup of Nations tournaments. AFCON returned to Morocco for the first time since 1976 in 2025, but the Atlas Lions were beaten by Senegal in a chaotic final.

The FRMF denied rumours that Regragui might be fired on Tuesday, despite the coach having verbally expressed his desire to leave the Moroccan national team in February, according to exclusive reports from Flashscore.

Morocco has qualified for this year's FIFA World Cup, where it was drawn into a group with Brazil, Haiti, and Scotland.

The Athletic reported on Wednesday that amid the uncertainty surrounding Regragui, the FRMF has initiated talks with former FC Barcelona manager and current Ajax target Xavi. Xavi has been a reported target of the Amsterdam giants since manager John Heitinga was fired in November. Rumours about the Spaniard joining Ajax gained traction after Jordi Cruyff, who brought Xavi to FC Barcelona in 2021 and is a good friend of the former star midfielder.

Xavi started his managerial career in 2019 at Qatari side Al-Sadd, where he won 7 trophies before joining FC Barcelona in 2021. In Catalonia, Xavi won the Supercopa de España and the Primera División in the 2022/23 season.
