As announced on Tuesday, the 70th Eredivisie season will kick off on Friday, August 8th, with a meeting between Fortuna Sittard and Europa League outfit Go Ahead Eagles.
The first of the 'Big Three' to be in action will be Feyenoord, who open their season on Saturday with a home game against NAC Breda. Reigning champions PSV will kick off their season later that evening with a home game against Sparta Rotterdam, against whom the Eindhoven side won their 26th league title in May. Ajax follow the next day with a home game against promoted Telstar.
Eerste Divisie champions FC Volendam will travel to Frisia, where Heerenveen awaits. Excelsior, the final promoted side, travel to Nijmegen to meet NEC. Play-off winners AZ host FC Groningen in an intriguing first-round matchup, whereas losing finalists FC Twente will stay in the East and face PEC Zwolle in the opening weekend. Fourth-placed FC Utrecht will open their season at home against Heracles Almelo.
Remarkably, Feyenoord's season will start with five consecutive games in Rotterdam. After opening their season against NAC, Feyenoord will face cross-city rivals Excelsior and Sparta, and host Fortuna Sittard and sc Heerenveen in rounds 3 and 5.
The first high-profile fixture is scheduled for round 6, when PSV host Ajax in a replay of last season's shocking 2-0 loss, which looked to have cost PSV the championship.
The two will meet again much further down the road, with the title candidates' next meeting scheduled for the first weekend of May. It's the first of a challenging run-in for PSV, who will cap off their season with an away game at Go Ahead Eagles and a home game against FC Twente.
As is tradition, the final two rounds will see all nine games played simultaneously. However, unlike last season, round 33 will be played on the weekend before round 34 instead of the final Wednesday of the season.
