Ajax win, but show their Achilles heel

Ajax broke a years-long curse on Saturday by beating AZ. The Alkmaar side had become Ajax's bogey team by staying unbeaten in 11 consecutive meetings, but lost 1-0 in the Johan Cruyff ArenA thanks to an early header from Tolu.

The matchup looked promising, with Michel Sanchez's Ajax showing strong progress and scoring plenty of goals in recent weeks. The Amsterdam giants showed none of that, however, despite a promising start - Ajax generated 0.31xG before the 38th minute, when star midfielder Julian Brandt went off injured. In the 52 minutes that followed, Ajax generated just 0.42 xG.

The record champions recorded their lowest xG of the Eredivisie season, and it was evident that when Brandt left the game, Ajax's creativity dipped. Brandt created one of Ajax's seven chances, of which three came from his fellow starters. For comparison, Brandt created three or more chances himself in six of his last eight appearances across all competitions. Ajax fans will hope for a favourable diagnosis.

ADO Den Haag don't want to learn

On Monday, ADO Den Haag announced that they had fired manager Robin Peter after the club won just one of their first 11 league games. On paper, based on this season's results, it makes sense. But all things considered, it's a puzzling decision.

Peter built one of the best Keuken Kampioen Divisie sides in recent years, and certainly the best ADO Den Haag team in years. They won the league with 89 points, the third-most in the last 15 years, and scored 90 goals, the third-most in the last decade. It was the foundation for a club that should be doing well, but only if it adapts to the highest level.

Peter did, but the board did not. The German manager barely had his wishlist fulfilled, with the board spending a total of €500,000 on two players. One of those players, goalkeeper Niclas Thiede, is a benchwarmer. The squad simply didn't get the quality boost it needed, and now Peter pays the price. No lessons learnt, a bad reputation gained.

It is very tight at the top

How good was round 11? Monster wins, shock results, beautiful goals... The Eredivisie keeps on delivering.

And we even get a seemingly tight title race this year, which is a welcome change after most of the seasons we just experienced. Feyenoord slipped up again, losing points at home for the third time this season as Fortuna Sittard stole a late point with Shiloh 't Zand's goal against his parent club. It was another tale of missed chances and carelessness at the back, though Tjark Ernst really should've done much better with 't Zand's goal.

Ajax's win put them one point behind the league leaders, while PSV and FC Twente got within two points with their 7-0 and 9-0 wins. AZ are losing more and more ground after winning just one league game since September 11th and are now five points behind. But there are critical weeks coming up, with Ajax facing FC Twente and Feyenoord in November and the entire top 4 facing big European challenges, including games against Real Madrid, Juventus, Inter, and Porto.
