Footballers always dream of the biggest dreams, be it in the glamour of the Premier League or on freezing cold, waterlogged Sunday mornings down the park.

A ninth-tier team from south-east London is achieving its dreams and could be creating bigger ones come Saturday evening.

Just two years ago, SE Dons were playing Sunday League football - grassroots level, the bedrock of the English game.

But now, they find themselves just one game away, one win away from reaching the FA Cup first round proper on their first attempt.

Standing in their way as the final hurdle in the fourth round of qualifying is a trip to Sholing - a seventh-tier side based in Hampshire.

Beginnings

SE Dons' relatively quick rise to this point is not to be sniffed at.

The club was founded in 2014 by rapper Andrew McHugh, better known as Don Strapzy, and his friends in the Orpington and Bromley District Sunday League.

It wasn't until 2017 that the Dons started documenting their journey on YouTube and social media - a decision which would draw a huge digital following.

Their YouTube channel currently has more than 250,000 subscribers and 110 million total views, with thousands more following across social media platforms.

The Dons won their division in 2021 and 2022, and two years later, an official move into the non-league football pyramid was made.

They entered the system in 2024/25 in a merger with Forest Hill Park and played under the 'Forest Hill Park' name until changing to 'SE Dons' for the next season onwards.

It was a campaign of promise and agony as they played and lost three finals, which included a promotion play-off after a third-place league finish.

They got over the line in their second season and first as SE Dons, winning the play-off final to gain promotion to the Southern Counties East League Premier Division.

The Dons' profile is also boosted by outspoken goalkeeper and captain George Desmond Kamurasi, also known as 'Big G'.

The 6-foot-6-inch keeper is known for his passionate pre-match team talks and recently hit the headlines after being selected as the preferred candidate to become a king in Uganda.

It was after Kamurasi's cousin, King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, passed away; however, he reportedly turned down the position on the throne.

FA Cup foray

Led by manager Antonio Gonnella, the Dons' FA Cup bow took place in early August with an extra preliminary round match at Lancing, where they ran out 6-0 winners.

It set up a preliminary round tie against Punjab United, and they needed to win a replay to advance to the first qualifying round, where they were drawn at home to Erith Town.

Two goals inside the first 10 minutes got them through in front of a bumper crowd of 910.

They then faced a trip to seventh-tier Chichester and emerged as 3-2 victors, scoring twice in second-half stoppage time to cause an upset.

The Dons picked up a statement 5-1 away win to Weymouth in the third qualifying round, meaning they have beaten four teams of a higher division to this point.

To give some more perspective, Weymouth were a National League side four years ago, while SE Dons were still amateurs on the playing fields of Mottingham.

Now, a fifth scalp in Sholing is in their sights as they look to add to the nearly £14,000 in prize money they have earned so far.

The winners will receive a £9,375 purse and an esteemed spot in the first round proper, which sees the introduction of League One and League Two sides to the draw.

Incredibly, that means SE Dons have a feasible chance of facing former Premier League champions Leicester in the next round, provided they go through on Saturday.

They do need to get past Sholing first, however, who are no slouches themselves after going to Ebbsfleet and beating them 2-1 last time out.
