Diego Simeone’s (52) Atletico Madrid triumphed 1-0 in a crucial battle between two LaLiga sides chasing UEFA Champions League football next season, stretching their unbeaten run over Real Betis to eight matches in the process.

It’s been over 10 years since Atletico failed to finish in LaLiga’s top four and they knew another triumph might all but secure their place amongst Europe’s elite next season.

On a pleasant evening in the Spanish capital the hosts - guarding a 10-game unbeaten league streak - showed plenty of early intent, although their fierce start may have been undone if Ayoze Perez hadn’t timidly chipped the ball into Jan Oblak’s hands when found in acres of space.

Although the scoreline remained unchanged in a back-and-forth half, supporters were treated to a fast-paced spectacle with Antoine Griezmann a constant pest to Betis’ backline as he operated between the lines. T

The Frenchman was involved in the build-up to Atletico’s biggest chance of the first period when Alvaro Morata was just inches away from providing the killer touch to Thomas Lemar’s cross.

Considering Simeone’s charges had netted nine goals across their last two home matches, the previous lack of goalmouth action might have surprised fans. But just minutes into the second half, Jose Maria Gimenez came close to opening the scoring as he met a whipped corner with a header that crashed against the crossbar.

That marked a prolonged spell of Atletico pressure and Yannick Carrasco perhaps should have done better when striking straight at Rui Silva from only 10 yards out just after the hour mark.

Despite a brave defensive performance, Manuel Pellegrini cut a frustrated figure as his Betis side failed to gain traction under the Civitas Metropolitan lights. An uninspired attacking display allowed the hosts to take control over the final minutes and they eventually made their pressure count, striking a late dagger into the hearts of their visitors.

Angel Correa beat several men in the Betis area before sending a composed finish past a rooted Silva, sealing a victory that may just secure their place in the top four.
