Frenkie de Jong was substituted off in the 83rd minute in the Netherlands' 1-1 draw against Poland. The midfielder subsequently pulled out of the qualifier against Lithuania with an undisclosed injury.
On Monday, FC Barcelona announced that the former Ajax star suffered a slight groin injury against Poland. The Catalan outfit did not disclose how long De Jong will be absent for, but all signs point towards a short stay on the sidelines.
During the press conference before Sunday's game against Lithuania, Netherlands manager Ronald Koeman explained what happened to the midfielder.
"Frenkie told us that he felt a sprain in the buttock area, so we decided not to take any risks. He has not yet recovered enough to be available to play," Koeman said.
"We don't think it is something serious, but letting him play would have been too risky."
FC Barcelona host Valencia on Sunday in their first LaLiga game following the international break, after which the Spanish giants visit Newcastle United in their opening UEFA Champions League game on Thursday, September 18th.
