Sergio Guardiola Navarro’s goal proved the difference in the proverbial six-pointer as Cadiz leapfrogged Valencia with a 2-1 win as both sides fight to preserve their top-flight status.

Cadiz have struggled to pick up results at home this season, claiming only 18 points from a possible 48 ahead of kick-off, but the crowd welcomed their team with a raucous atmosphere at the Estadio Nuevo Mirandilla.

It was the hosts who fashioned the first chance of the game. A corner was headed back across goal to Ivan Alejo, whose effort was cleared off the line by Mouctar Diakhaby.

They've scored the fewest home goals of anyone in La Liga, but Cadiz went ahead against relegation rivals Valencia in the 39th minute. A long throw was flicked on at the near post, and with Los Che’s defence caught flat-footed, Gonzalo Escalante reacted quickest to head in the opener.

There was an expectation that a reaction from Valencia that was so desperately needed would materialise after the break, but that didn't prove to be the case.

All hopes of the visitors extending their winning run to three seemed to be dashed when Guardiola got across his man to double Cadiz’s lead just one minute after the restart.

Albeit a little late, that Valencian reaction did come soon after though in the way of Samuel Lino, who burst through and finished for his fourth goal of the season in the 51st minute to make it 2-1.

Ruben Baraja threw on Edinson Cavani with 10 minutes remaining in a desperate attempt to prevent Cadiz from claiming a league double over Los Che, but there was nothing the Uruguayan could do as the hosts ran out deserved winners, securing three crucial points in the process.

Valencia are now 17th and in serious danger of dropping back into the bottom three, while Cadiz are up to 14th.
