Porto took full advantage of Sporting's slip-up in the derby against Benfica to consolidate their lead at the top of the Portuguese league, beating Tondela among other things thanks to an inspiring performance from Danish international midfielder Victor Froholdt.

Porto coach Francesco Farioli made seven changes after Porto were eliminated from the Europa League (1-0, Nottingham Forest), with Rodrigo Mora and Pietuszewski returning to the starting eleven while the visitors opted for a five-defence formation, bringing Brayan Medina and Tiago Manso into the starting line-up after the draw with Gil Vicente (2-2).

With Froholdt in the starting lineup, the home team initially struggled against a solid and cohesive Tondela rearguard, which looked very well-organised throughout the first half.

The home side, however, had a glorious chance to edge ahead when Joe Hodge intercepted Rodrigo Mora's shot with his hand inside the area, but Bernardo Fontes parried the penalty from Alan Varela to safety.

Three minutes into the second half, the home side managed to break the deadlock when Turkish striker Deniz Gul worked his way past three opponents to set up Gabriel Veiga, who just had to poke the ball into the open net.

The opening goal immediately added a spark to Porto's attack, and they came very close to adding to their tally with a shot from Froholdt that hit the post. Tondela lost their way after conceding the goal and were punished again after 65 minutes as the Dane confirmed his blistering form.

Moses Sithole made a mistake in the build-up, and Froholdt, as deadly as ever, took advantage of the confusion to steal the ball, and his tricky left-footed shot flew under the reach of Fontes to double the Porto lead.

There weren't any more goals added to the scoreline after that, meaning that Porto is now seven and eight points behind Benfica and Sporting in second and third place, respectively.
