Could Troy Parrott's heroics for Ireland earn him a move to the Premier League?

Troy Parrott will still be the name on all football supporters' lips this week after his incredible heroics for the Republic of Ireland against Portugal and Hungary in the recent international break.

Not content with a brace against Cristiano Ronaldo and co, which gave the Irish a chance of qualifying for the World Cup playoffs, he followed that up with a hat-trick against Hungary in the final Group F qualification game.

His 95th-minute winner in that five-goal thriller knocked the Hungarians out of the playoff positions and ensured his side got one final opportunity to book their spot at FIFA's showpiece tournament next summer in the USA.

The goal also sparked scenes of utter delirium both on the pitch and in bars and clubs worldwide.

If they can complete the job in the playoffs, Ireland will be at the finals for the first time in a quarter of a century, and so it's no wonder that Parrot's heroics have put him front and centre.

What's more, the former Tottenham man might well have played himself into the shop window, with rumours suggesting that a move back to the Premier League could now be on the cards.

Unable to make his mark at Tottenham

At just 22 years of age, Parrott has certainly had to work hard to emerge as a forward of top-flight quality.

Whilst at Spurs, he made his professional debut against Colchester United in a League Cup tie during September 2019, and then a Premier League bow against Burnley in November of the same year.

Unable to dislodge Harry Kane or Son Heung-min from the starting lineup, however, he made only two more appearances before being farmed out on loan to Millwall, Ipswich, MK Dons and Preston.

During those three seasons, he made a collective 104 league appearances, scoring just 14 goals and providing six assists. Nine domestic cup appearances added a further two goals to his resume.

Dutch football lifeline

With a career at the elite level almost certainly in the balance by that point, Parrott made the leap to Dutch football and another loan spell, this time at Excelsior.

It was there that he found his level, though a wonderful return of 17 goals and five assists in 29 league games wasn't enough for Tottenham to consider giving the striker a second chance in North London.

Step forward AZ Alkmaar, who signed Parrott for what seems now to be a paltry €8m/£6.7m, and handed him a confidence-boosting five-year contract.

"It just didn't happen at Tottenham and I'm OK with that," he said at the time. "I look back with a smile. It's a place where I grew up. I moved away from home quite young, so when I went there, I was in a phase of going from a kid to a teenager and then past that.

"I think AZ is the perfect club for me to take the next steps in my development."

Shining at AZ Alkmaar

Across the 2024/25 and 2025/26 Dutch top-flight campaigns, Parrot has continued to shine, and in 37 league appearances for AZ, he has bagged a very impressive 20 goals.

Two goals in five Dutch Cup appearances as well as 11 goals and three assists in 19 European appearances, split between the Europa and Conference Leagues, is a sure sign that the centre-forward remains in the groove.

His five goals in two games for Ireland certainly couldn't have been better timed either.

When one considers that he'd only previously scored five for his country in four years, and four of those were in friendlies with the other coming in the Nations League, Parrott can hardly have done much more to alert clubs to the possibilities.

West Ham the next stop of Parrott's career?

Of course, and with the greatest respect, the Eredivisie isn't quite at the same competitive level as the English top-flight; however, with the benefit of his experience over the past few seasons, it could now be the most opportune time for the Dublin-born striker to test himself against the best English football has to offer.

West Ham are thought to be the club most willing to test AZ's resolve, and with the East Londoners accepting that Niclas Fullkrug will leave them as early as January 2026, there will be a need to replace the German quickly.

Though Parrott's own intentions aren't clear at the moment, if his current employers are willing to accept an offer from the Irons, it would be difficult to imagine him turning down such an opportunity, particularly in a World Cup year.

A year that could get so much better for him and the Republic of Ireland if they're successful in their March playoff.
