Kevin Danso believes Tottenham Hotspur’s impressive 2-0 Champions League win over Borussia Dortmund can be a turning point for their Premier League form.

First-half goals from Cristian Romero and Dominic Solanke sealed the victory on Tuesday night, giving Spurs their first win of 2026 and extending their unbeaten home run in European competition to 24 matches.

The result came after a difficult period for Thomas Frank’s side, who had faced heavy criticism following a run of five games without a win in all competitions, including three defeats.

While praising the team’s performance, the Austria international said European matches often have a different pace compared to domestic games, but insisted that the level shown against Dortmund must now be carried into the Premier League.

"I think it was (a) very good (performance against Dortmund), especially in the first half, I think we showed what we're made of and what we're capable of and I think we just need to continue like that," Danso told the media in the mixed zone.

"It’s a different competition, a different type of game, and we know it’s a difficult phase right now. But we’re together. Unity was spoken about during the week after the weekend’s game, and we know we have to stick together, keep our heads on, do a bit more, and grind out the results.

"We want to be good in all competitions, and Europe is an opportunity to do that. We showed it again (on Tuesday). We’re a good side, and we just have to keep going and try to do the same in the Premier League."

Romero’s leadership

Danso also praised captain Cristian Romero for his influence, describing him as a leader both on and off the pitch. The Argentine centre-back gave Spurs the lead in the 14th minute, taking his goal tally to five in all competitions from a defensive position.

"I think, you know, he's a person who leads by example on the pitch see, and everything he does, he goes 100 percent," he continued.

"And you know, he helps the team, he’s a leader on and off the pitch, and he showed that exactly again by scoring to put us in front."

Heitinga making a difference

Danso also shared his thoughts on the appointment of Dutch great John Heitinga. The former Everton centre-back was recently announced as Spurs manager Frank’s assistant following his departure from Ajax.

The 27-year-old added: "He's been a great addition, you know, I think he's got a lot of experience.

"Everybody knows, and he's just been a great addition, you know, keeping us on track, that's exactly what we need. We're happy to have him."

Criticism from fans 'understandable'

When asked whether the harsh criticism from fans was fair, given that the squad has been plagued by injuries, he stated: "Yeah, I mean, the frustration from the fans is understandable. Of course, we want to win games, and that’s what we try to do.

"We take it on board, but ultimately it’s down to us, the players on the pitch, to do our best and get the results we deserve. We’re all professionals, and injuries happen.

"Sometimes you go through difficult phases, but as I said, we just have to keep our heads down and grind it out.

"We know it’s tough at the moment, but we’re aware, and sometimes in life you face challenges. That’s how big teams are built, and that’s exactly what we want to be.

“Definitely, it’s down to us in the end, and in every game, we try to give our best. Even when things aren’t going well, we focus on winning the game and getting the results we deserve.

"I feel like that’s our next step: to make sure that, no matter the circumstances, we keep fighting to win games and deliver results."

Tottenham travel to relegation-threatened Burnley on Saturday, aiming to turn around their underwhelming league form and build on the momentum from their European win.
