Former England international reportedly arrested on suspicion of attempted rape

A former England and Premier League footballer from the 2010s has been arrested on suspicion of attempted rape after being detained at Stansted Airport, according to reports.

The Sun reported that the player, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, was stopped by Border Force officers at passport control on Sunday before boarding a flight.

Essex Police stated: "A man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted rape and has been bailed to a date in late February 2026 while we continue our enquiries."

According to the newspaper, police records showed the suspect was wanted in connection with a non-recent allegation.

The investigation is ongoing.
