How record-breaking Harvey Barnes is continuing to show his importance to Newcastle

When Newcastle hosted Leeds on Wednesday evening, few would surely have expected to see a seven-goal thriller, and even less so, the Premier League's latest-ever goal.

St. James' Park does generally have a part to play in these magical moments too.

Always late drama at St. James' Park

Earlier this season, the famous old ground bore witness to a game against Liverpool, which featured an 88th-minute equaliser from Newcastle, and then a stunning Reds winner in the 100th minute from Rio Ngumoha.

Fast forward to the Leeds fixture... an 88th-minute penalty awarded to Newcastle and converted by Bruno Guimaraes, before Harvey Barnes nabbed all three points for the Magpies in the 112th minute.

Barnes, oddly enough, was also the match winner in another 4-3 at St. James' Park back in March 2024 against a West Ham side that threw their advantage away.

In that 2023/24 season, the attacking midfielder-cum-winger missed 17 Premier League games through injury, and his heroics against the Hammers came directly after a return from a hamstring injury.

Just one full game in 2023/24

It's worth pointing out, however, that the following match after the West Ham win came against Everton, and was the only top-flight game in the whole season in which he played a full 90 minutes.

On only four other occasions did he play more than 45 minutes, so his return of five goals in the 21 games he took part in was noteworthy.

He also managed to provide three assists in the games against Aston Villa, Everton and Sheffield United.

33 games in 2024/25 saw Barnes score nine goals - the joint second-best return of his career - as well as providing four assists.

Once again, Eddie Howe clearly didn't see any value in utilising the Englishman in anything more than a bit-part role.

An improved seven full games suggested that Barnes was at least making some headway, though given that six of those appearances came from April onwards, one could surmise that injuries to key players rather than form led to the player's more regular employment in the starting XI.

Barnes is continuing to improve

Having only been benched for one game in the current campaign (vs home town club Burnley), would also appear to lead one to the conclusion that Barnes is coming into his own for Howe again.

And yet, he's still only managed two full games in 2025/26; the season opener against Aston Villa and the game against Leeds.

His game time in terms of minutes played has been steadily increasing, however, and he's certainly proved his worth in the Champions League too.

In the six games that the Magpies have played so far this season in the premier European competition, he's scored four goals - one against Union SG, a brace against Benfica and another vs Marseille.

Goals that have helped the North East giants to 12th position in the Champions League table, and just two points away from automatic qualification to the knockout stages with two games to play.

Superb pass completion

Though he might still not be classed as a 'regular' for want of a better term, it's clear that Harvey Barnes is becoming ever more important for his club.

His contributions are always solid, energetic and industrious, and he certainly adds something to what is an improving attack.

For example, his pass completion stats of 81.3% in all competitions put him right into the upper bracket amongst teammates that, in most cases, have played a lot more football than he has.

50 shots on target since he joined the club has only been bettered by Bruno Guimaraes (52), Anthony Gordon (72) and Alexander Isak (103); again, all players who have had more minutes.

If there's one area where he could consistently do more, it's concerning his tackle success rate.

England honours remain a pipe dream at present

For such a combative player, it's a surprise to see his win percentage in this regard at 46.7%.

Only William Osula (33.3%) and Isak (31.8%) have a lower success rate in the entire 29-man squad, with the former hardly having played since joining - five starts in 31 appearances - and the latter now at Liverpool and arguably never really required to 'put his foot in.'

There's no suggestion that the Magpies are looking to dispense with Barnes' services anytime soon, and as he showed with that performance against Leeds, there's every reason to believe that he will continue to evidence his importance to the squad.

Perhaps the one overriding issue for the player is that, at 28 years of age, he probably would've wanted more game time than he has received, in order to have had a shot at making more than the solitary England cap that he has to his name.

The fact that he's now making selection duties much more difficult for Howe and his right-hand man, Jason Tindall, tells its own story, and there's plenty of Harvey Barnes' story still to be written.
