Manchester United have sacked manager Ruben Amorim after 14 months in charge, with Darren Fletcher to take on an interim position.

The club have released a statement in the past few minutes that reads: "Ruben Amorim has departed his role as Head Coach of Manchester United.

"Ruben was appointed in November 2024 and led the team to a UEFA Europa League Final in Bilbao in May.

"With Manchester United sitting sixth in the Premier League, the club’s leadership has reluctantly made the decision that it is the right time to make a change.

"This will give the team the best opportunity of the highest possible Premier League finish. The club would like to thank Ruben for his contribution to the club and wishes him well for the future."

Man United went on to confirm that: "Darren Fletcher will take charge of the team against Burnley on Wednesday."

David Ornstien is reporting that Darren Fletcher is likely to stay as interim boss until the end of the season.

The decision comes after tensions were reportedly growing between the Manchester United board and Ruben Amorim, with relations between the director of football, Jason Wilcox and Amorim at breaking point.

Manchester United sit 6th in the Premier League table just after the halfway point of the season and are on the back of two underwhelming draws at home to Wolves to end the year and then away to Leeds United on Sunday.

Amorim was the 10th Manchester United manager since Sir Alex Ferguson and his record speaks for itself.

Analysis

His win percentage of just 32% is dreadful and where the Red Devils have failed to compete for titles under previous post-Ferguson managers, they have been battling around mid-table or lower for the majority of Amorim's underwhelming reign.

Major questions have to be asked about INEOS, too, after they decided to bring in a unique coach with a unique formation and then refused to provide him with players suited to play that system.

A lot can be taken from Amorim's final act after the Leeds United game, where he said: "I came here to be the manager of Manchester United. Not to be the coach of Manchester United. And that is clear."

Like the above list of failed coaches before Amorim, it is clear that the Portuguese felt as if he was misled by the United board and let down. INEOS's approach of bringing in players not specific to any one coach or system only works if you bring in an adaptable manager and not one with hard-core values and a system that requires specificity.

Amorim will take the fall as managers always do at Old Trafford, but INEOS might want to look at themselves after a miserable two years as part-owners that has seen mistake followed by mistake.
