Why Everton will struggle to topple Michael Carrick's resurgent Man Utd side

Manchester United travel to the Hill Dickinson Stadium for a Monday night appointment with Everton, as they look to earn the points which would see them overhaul Chelsea in fourth place.

Michael Carrick hasn't lost a game as manager of the Red Devils, and the squad remain unbeaten in their last nine top-flight games (W5, D4), which is their longest run since a 14-game streak between January and May 2021.

United unbeaten in 2026

In fact, they're the only Premier League side not to lose a league game in this calendar year, which is quite the turnaround considering their form from not too long ago.

Everton, by contrast, have lost five of their last nine league home games (W2, D2), which is as many as they lost in their previous 28 matches (W12, D11).

David Moyes's side are so near yet so far from the European places ahead of the game, with the Scot knowing that three points will bring them to within five of their visitors, who currently occupy fifth place, which would guarantee them Europa League football next season.

The Toffees won the first meeting between the teams in November, and if they were to do the double, it would be the first time they have achieved the feat since Moyes was in charge at Old Trafford back in the 2013/14 campaign.

Dewsbury-Hall could make history

If Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, scorer of the winning goal in that game, gets on the score sheet again on Monday night, he will become the first English player to score in both of Everton’s top-flight meetings with United since Andy King way back in 1978/79.

With five goals in total, Dewsbury-Hall, along with Iliman Ndiaye and Thierno Barry, are the Merseyside outfit's top scorers in league play.

However, the 27-year-old has only scored three since that November fixture, and against a United side that now appears almost rock solid in defence, finding the net again could be a big ask.

He would benefit from a supply line from Jack Grealish, but the England international remains out injured and unlikely to play again this season. Given that Grealish, on loan from Man City, still has the most assists for Everton this season (six) and has created the most chances for the team (38), that's a real blow.

Jake O'Brien is suspended for this game, but Moyes can call upon Seamus Coleman once more, should he wish to.

Mbeumo the man in form

United are still without Patrick Dorgu and Matthijs de Ligt, whilst Mason Mount is unlikely to be risked.

In Bryan Mbeumo, however, they do have an in-form striker, who has found the net on nine occasions so far in 2025/26, four of which were the all-important opening goals to a game.

His 29 shots on target are also the most for his team in the current campaign.

Will the pupil become the master?

It will be their first visit to Everton's new ground, and Carrick will surely be hoping that his side has similar luck to that which they experienced at Goodison Park.

With 19 away wins and 42 victories overall, they have beaten Everton on more occasions than any team has triumphed over an opponent in Premier League history.

Having played under Moyes, Carrick will now face him in the opposition dugout, becoming the third coach in the EPL era to do so, along with Mikel Arteta and David Unsworth.

Everton have won two, drawn three and lost just one of their last six games, but at home this season, their record of four wins, four draws, and five losses in 13 Premier League games isn't anything to shout about.

They can be the most stubborn of opponents, mind you, and as Moyes showed during his previous spell at the club as well as the time he spent at West Ham, he won't rest unless his team are consistently giving 100 per cent effort across the whole 90 minutes.

Everton are unbeaten against United in the last two matches - three if you count the Premier League Summer Series fixture - but Moyes should be mindful that in the three previous games to that, United won them all to nil (4-0, 2-0 and 3-0).

Worst passers in the division

One standout statistic that might worry the home support too is that the Toffees are the worst in the division for total passes so far: 9919.

Second-bottom for shots on target (85) is in stark contrast to United's output in this regard.

Their 148 has them top of the pile, whilst their total shots taken (417) places them second. Interestingly, a shot conversion rate of 15% is exactly the same for the hosts and their visitors.

With both sides having scored the most amount of league goals in the final 15 minutes of games this season - a period when Everton have bagged 10 and United 13 - don't be in the least surprised if there's a big finale to this game either.
