Memphis Depay was taken off early in Corinthians' Serie A match against Flamengo on Sunday with a thigh injury that could keep him out of the Netherlands' friendlies in March.

Just before coming off, Memphis played a key role in Yuri Alberto's goal, providing the pre-assist with a trivela pass.

It didn't come without consequences, however: Memphis fell to the ground, received medical attention and then went straight to the changing room at the Neo Química Arena.

With the severity of the injury still undetermined, the striker has become a problem not only for Corinthians but also for the Dutch national team. Memphis has been called up for Oranje's March friendlies against Norway and Ecuador, scheduled for March 27th and 31st, respectively.

Phone controversy

After being taken off and returning to the Corinthians bench, Memphis was caught on his phone during the game. A team staffer rushed over, urging the striker ot put it away. The incident received widespread media attention, and Memphis responded by stating that he was in contact with the Dutch national team's medical team.

"Just to clarify, my moment with the phone was pure to communicate with the medical staff in the Netherlands at that moment," Memphis said in a post on X, formerly Twitter.

"I came outside to show support to my team, while I could’ve stayed inside the dressing room with the injury."

The Netherlands are in Group F of the World Cup alongside Tunisia, Japan and a European qualifier. Their opening match is scheduled for 14 June against Japan at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
