Chivu's imperious Inter Milan clinch Serie A title with three rounds to spare

Serie A giants Internazionale claimed their 21st Scudetto after results over the weekend gave them an unassailable 12-point lead at the top of the table with three full rounds to play.

Heading into the 35th round of the 2025/26 Serie A season, Inter knew they could clinch the title with a win on Sunday at home against Parma or before that if Napoli lost on Saturday and their city rivals, AC Milan, failed to win on Sunday afternoon.

As it turned out, Napoli drew and Milan lost, so Inter clinched a 2-0 win over Parma to seal the deal.

For head coach Cristian Chivu, it is a monumental achievement in his first season in charge of the Nerazzurri.

Former player Chivu was entrusted at the helm following Simone Inzaghi's decision to leave the club in the summer of 2025 and take up a role at Saudi club Al Hilal.

Inzaghi was a particularly hard act to follow, given he also won the league (2023/24), two Coppa Italia trophies, and reached the Champions League final on two occasions.

Heading into the current season, immediate success was not expected from 45-year-old Chivu, especially with Antonio Conte's Napoli out to defend their title and AC Milan under the experienced leadership of serial winner Massimiliano Allegri.

However, Inter's two biggest challengers faded away as the season wore on, while fourth-placed Juventus were never really in the picture, struggling early in the season and changing managers back in October.

Sparking attacking unit & solid defence

Inter have shone as an attacking unit in Italy this season, scoring at least 30 more goals than both Napoli and Milan, quite incredibly.

Leading from the front, as so often, has been captain Lautaro Martinez, who has a division-high 16 goals and counting. Marcus Thuram (13 goals) and Hakan Calhanoglu (nine) have also chipped in on that front. Meanwhile, 20-year-old Francesco 'Pio' Esposito has enjoyed a breakout campaign with six goals.

Full-back Federico Dimarco has led the way in terms of assists with 18 - not just the most in the league but the most in any single Serie A season ever. While star midfielder Nicolo Barella has added more than half a dozen of his own.

Defensively, Inter have conceded less than a goal a game on average (31), with veteran keeper Yann Sommer and fellow Swiss Manuel Akanji, a summer loan signing, both virtual ever-presents as the side strode to the title with just five losses all season.

Inter disappointed in the Champions League, however, going out in the play-off round to Norwegian side Bodo/Glimt. That only cranked up the pressure on Chivu's side domestically, and unlike Napoli and Milan, who dropped crucial points in the spring, Inter held their nerve to storm to the title.

In the league, their late-season form has been the difference in what was threatening to be a close title race. Since losing the derby to Milan back in November, they have lost just once more in Serie A - also against Milan.

Since that defeat, their current eight-match unbeaten run not only sees them as title winners, but also in the Coppa Italia final as Chivu eyes a rare double.

The last time Inter won the double was back in 2010 under Jose Mourinho during his treble-winning season (2009/10). Only Juventus have won more Italian top-tier titles (36).
