Fiorentina ended a run of 13 winless H2H meetings against Inter Milan with a fantastic 1-0 success at the San Siro. The Viola have now won eight in a row and remain hopeful of a top-six finish, with an overnight gap of just seven points behind sixth-placed AS Roma.

A frantic end-to-end start set the overall theme of the first half, as UEFA Europa Conference League quarter-finalists Fiorentina had multiple chances on goal, with their best effort coming from Gaetano Castrovili pouncing on a loose ball on the edge of the box. The Apulian-born midfielder’s volley was saved well by André Onana, while at the other end, Inter themselves would have been disappointed not to have scored at least one goal in the opening 45 minutes.

Spurned chances fell to Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Romelu Lukaku, but a combination of great last-ditch defending and wastefulness was the biggest issue for the Nerazzurri’s key threats. That said, Denzel Dumfries was dominating the right flank and putting dangerous crosses into the box, but his teammates failed to convert the chances he provided, ultimately leading to a goalless HT scoreline.

It was initially more of the same after HT, before the Viola finally made one of their chances count in the 53rd minute. Of all potential heroes, ex-Milan player Giacomo ‘Jack’ Bonaventura nodded in at the back post, after Onaná initially parried Arthur Cabral’s header from a corner. Now at risk of successive home league losses for the first time since February 2022, Inter looked to respond immediately, and came within inches of doing so, after Nicolò Barcella smashed the upright with a shot from the edge of the box.

Dumfries once again was proving to be the biggest threat for Inter as the minutes ticked by, and his whipped ball into the box was met by Raoul Bellanova at point-blank range, but Pieto Terracciano made a fantastic save to deny the home side an equaliser. Unsurprisingly, Simone Inzaghi called on all of his attacking arsenal for the final quarter-hour, with Edin Džeko joining Lautaro Martínez and Lukaku up front in a clear show of intent to throw everything at Fiorentina.

Despite Inter producing an attacking onslaught late on, the Viola defended superbly to hold on for all three points – their first maximum against Inter at the San Siro since 2015. As for Inter, this defeat could end up being a significant blow to their top-four pursuit, with fellow heavyweights Milan, Atalanta, Roma and Juventus chasing behind, and just nine points separating the five teams.
