Juventus missed out on the opportunity to move up to second in Serie A after being held to a 1-1 draw by Bologna, extending their winless run to five matches in all competitions.

Bologna have not beaten Juve since February 2011, while their last home victory against the Bianconeri came back in November 1998

However, they were on course to correct that after being awarded a controversial penalty when Riccardo Orsolini went tumbling inside the box from Danilo’s challenge.

Orsolini confidently dispatched the subsequent spot-kick in the 10th minute to become the joint-highest Italian goalscorer in the league in 2023 with seven goals, level with Domenico Berardi of Sassuolo.

Massimiliano Allegri’s side were pushing for an equaliser, and Lukasz Skorupski made two outstanding saves to deny Nicolo Fagioli in quick succession after keeping out compatriot Arkadiusz Milik’s strike.

The visitors squandered an even better chance to level the scores with a spot-kick of their own when Jhon Lucumi brought down Milik, but the Poland international picked himself up and took a dismal penalty which Skorupski comfortably saved and Bologna held on for a slender half-time lead.

That lead was wiped out when Milik emphatically made amends for that missed spot-kick with a brilliant first-time, left-footed strike just past the hour mark.

While Milik will attract the limelight for his finish, the introduction of Samuel Iling-Junior made a huge difference, with his run ultimately creating the opportunity. The England under-20 international should have had a goal himself moments later, only to lack composure when taking a close-range shot.

Bologna were slow to make an impact after the break but wasted a superb chance to retake the lead when Stefan Posch saw his diving header go over the bar from Nikola Moro's brilliant ball into the box.

That seemed to spark Thiago Motta’s team back into life, and Joshua Zirkzee should have tapped the ball in at the near post after Orsolini acrobatically played Musa Barrow's cross into the Dutchman's path.

Michel Aebischer and Matias Soule both had gilt-edged chances to steal the points for both sides late on, but it ended all square on the night.

The Bianconeri remain third but with only one win from their last eight games across all competitions. Their stuttering form will worry Allegri in what is a highly-congested battle for the UEFA Champions League places, with only five points separating Juve from Atalanta in seventh.

Meanwhile, European qualification may be a pipe dream now for Bologna, they sit comfortably in eighth and are now unbeaten in five league matches at the Stadio Renato Dall'Ara.
