Monza put in a remarkable performance to come from two goals down to win 3-2 and end Fiorentina’s impressive 12-game Serie A unbeaten run, putting a real dent in the Viola’s European ambitions.

Monza were on a poor run of form at home having only won once in their previous seven league games at the Brianteo Stadium, and those woes quickly looked set to continue, as they found themselves 2-0 down within the opening 15 minutes.

Pulling all the strings for a Fiorentina side still jubilant after reaching the Europa Conference League semi-finals in midweek, Christian Kouame was heavily involved in both of the goals, firstly opening the scoring by getting on the end of Arthur Cabral’s corner to power a header into the bottom corner.

Kouame then turned provider by brilliantly picking out Riccardo Saponara, who had all the time in the world to find the bottom corner and double his side’s advantage.

However, the visitors’ hopes of keeping a fourth consecutive away league clean sheet for the first time in their history were wiped out when Cristiano Biraghi experienced some personal misfortune, turning the ball into his own net when trying to clear a Gianluca Caprari effort.

If there was a stroke of luck in their first goal, there was nothing lucky about Fiorentina their second, as Monza completed a stunning first-half comeback when Dany Mota got on the end of Michele Di Gregorio's long punt upfield and dinked the onrushing Pietro Terracciano to level the match.

Remarkably, Matteo Pessina thought he had given Monza the lead in stoppage time when he poked the ball over the line. However, a VAR review revealed he had handled the ball in the build-up.

Now looking much more like the heroic side that claimed a famous 1-0 win over Inter Milan at the San Siro just last week, Monza continued to be on top following the restart, and took the lead shortly after half-time.

Sofyan Amrabat fouled Mota in the area, allowing Pessina to step up from the spot and complete a crazy turnaround.

The hosts put in a brilliant defensive performance to preserve their lead for the rest of the game and claim three vital points that moves them up to 12th, one point behind 10th-placed Fiorentina.
