Bafana Bafana head into two friendly matches against Panama over the next week with a strong record against teams from Central America having never lost to one in the past.

The matches against Panama in Durban (Friday) and Cape Town (Tuesday) are vital preparation for the 2026 World Cup, with coach Hugo Broos eager to test his side against a team that plays a similar style to Mexico, whom they face in the opening game of the tournament on June 11.

Bafana have met Panama once before, a 1-1 draw at the 2005 Gold Cup when Lungisani Ndlela scored, but the Central Americans won the penalty shoot-out that followed.

In six previous games against teams from that part of the world, they have won three and drawn three.

Bafana have met Costa Rica twice and won on both occasions, claiming a 2-1 friendly success in 2003 as Siyabonga Nomvete and Patrick Mayo netted.

They met again in a friendly in 2015 and this time Andile Jali was on target in a 1-0 win away from home.

On that same tour, Bafana played to a 1-1 friendly draw with Honduras as Erick Mathoho got an early goal, but Bafana could not hold on.

Bafana played to a 1-1 draw with Guatemala at the 2005 Gold Cup, with Siyabonga Nkosi getting the goal, before a 5-0 friendly win in 2010 in the build-up to the World Cup that has since been tainted by match-fixing allegations.

Katlego Mphela scored two penalties, with Reneilwe Letsholonyane, Surprise Moriri and Bernard Parker getting the other goals.
