The Faroe Islands' dream of reaching a maiden FIFA World Cup is still very much alive, after a sensational 2-1 victory over the Czech Republic in Torshavn secured their first-ever set of three successive victories.

This has already been a very impressive campaign for a history-making Faroes side that has claimed three World Cup qualifying wins in a single cycle for the first time. Eyðun Klakstein's team began confidently here too, as Arni Frederiksberg's early effort was blocked in the opening exchanges.

It was proving to be anything but a straightforward task for a Czech side sitting 39th in FIFA’s rankings - some 97 places above the hosts - as they struggled to find a way past a resolute backline.

Matej Vydra should have broken the deadlock shortly before half-time at the end of a rare well-worked Czech move, but somehow fired wide after meeting Vaclav Jemelka's ball across the box.

Jemelka then ghosted into the box unmarked to meet Vaclav Cerny's inswinging cross, but blazed over the bar at the end of a first half which yielded no shots on target for either side.

Frederiksberg was the first player to test either goalkeeper in this contest, cutting in from the right and unleashing a left-footed strike that was saved by Matej Kovar three minutes shy of the hour mark.

The hosts were daring to dream, and that dream was turning into a reality when Hanus Sorensen sent the ground into raptures after firing the Faroes in front with a superb first-time finish from Jakup Andreasen’s precise ball across the box.

Adam Karabec briefly spared the blushes of Ivan Hasek’s side with a cool finish inside the box, dispatching home a loose ball after a scrappy passage of play to restore parity.

However, there was time for another twist in this sensational contest when some calamitous Czech defending allowed Martin Agnarsson to slide the ball into an empty net and restore the hosts’ advantage.

The visitors pressed forward in a bid to avoid the ignominy of an embarrassing defeat, but failed to find the second goal they craved to suffer a staggering first-ever head-to-head loss.

Klakstein’s men have now lost only one of their last seven home games (W3, D3), closing the gap between themselves and the Czechs to a solitary point in what is turning into a fascinating battle for a top-two finish.
