Morocco have what it takes to defeat Argentina in the final of the FIFA U20 World Cup, according to former youth international Yassine Zouchou.

Mohamed Ouahbi’s side have been one of the surprise packages of this year’s tournament, overcoming Spain and Brazil in the group stage to advance to the knockout rounds.

In the Round of 16, they edged South Korea 2-1 before eliminating pre-tournament favourites the United States and France to reach their maiden final.

Now, only Argentina stand between the Atlas Cubs and a historic world title. Zouchou, who was part of the Moroccan team that finished fourth at the 2005 edition in the Netherlands, admits the South Americans are favourites but believes they could still be upset.

"Our boys have done exceptionally well to reach this stage of the competition, and they truly have nothing to lose as no one expected them to get this far,” he told Flashscore.com.

"I want them to go out there and give everything against Argentina, who are undoubtedly a strong team with a rich history in this tournament.

"The Argentines may be the favourites for another world title, but football has always been a game of surprises, and I’m backing Morocco to pull off another upset.

"It won’t be easy, but this team has shown great spirit, discipline, and quality throughout the competition. If they can stay composed and prevent Argentina from scoring early, then I believe they stand a very good chance of making history."

Morocco have become the third African team to reach the final of the FIFA U20 World Cup, following in the footsteps of Nigeria and Ghana

The North Africans’ previous best performance came at the 2005 edition in the Netherlands, where they finished fourth after losing to Brazil in the third-place playoff, following a semi-final defeat to Nigeria.

Argentina, on the other hand, have reached the final seven times and are the most successful nation in the tournament’s history, with six titles while their last triumph coming in 2007.

Despite the daunting challenge, Zouchou believes Morocco have what it takes to emulate Ghana and become only the second African team to lift the coveted world title.

"This Argentina team is very different, and so is this Morocco side compared to the one that played in 2005,” he continued.

"My message to the boys is simple, they should stay calm, stay focused, and take your chances when it matters most. No matter what happens in the final, they have already made the nation proud.

"Considering the quality of opposition they’ve faced so far, it’s clear their impressive run is no fluke. They’ve shown great character, discipline, and belief throughout the tournament.

"I just hope they can go one step further and crown this incredible journey with the title and it would be a truly historic moment for Moroccan and African football."

Argentina are aiming to become the first team since their 2001 side to win every match in normal time at the FIFA U20 World Cup finals.

A clean-sheet victory would also see them join Uruguay (2023) as only the second team to lift the trophy without conceding a goal in the knockout stage since the tournament expanded to 24 teams in 1997.

Meanwhile, Morocco are hoping to become the first African nation to win the title since Ghana famously defeated Brazil on penalties in the 2009 final in Egypt.

This marks the sixth time an African team has reached the final, with five of those matchups coming against South American opponents. The only exception was in 1989, when Nigeria fell 2-0 to Portugal in Riyadh.

Also, Argentina’s Mateo Silvetti could join Ramon Diaz, Diego Maradona, and Lionel Messi as the only players to score in all four knockout matches if he finds the net again against the North Africans.
