Ski mountaineering: Women's and men's sprint finals

13:55 and 14:15 CET - Stelvio Ski Center in Bormio

The 2026 Winter Olympic Games in Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo have featured eight new medal events and one new official sport: ski mountaineering, or “skimo.”

In this sport, athletes ascend mountains on skis fitted with climbing skins, take off their equipment in transition areas between sections, and carry their skis over sections too steep to ski, and then make the descent in alpine terrain. In total, 36 skimo athletes have competed at the Games.

Two of the three gold medals are to be decided on Thursday in the sprint races, which consist of several knockout contests.

France's Emily Harrop heads into the event as the women's favourite, while Spain's Oriol Cardona Coll is expected to claim the men's gold as the defending world champion and reigning ISMF World Cup sprint title holder.

Men's 1500m speed skating

16.30 CET - Milano Speed Skating Stadium

Jordan Stolz will head into the event as the clear favourite to win the 1500m, aiming for a triple-gold performance.

The 21-year-old has been described as "unbeatable" and "untouchable" over the past two seasons, dominating the World Cup circuit. He already secured gold in the 1000m and 500m at the 2026 Games before the 1500m.

Should Stolz win, he would become the first American male to win more than two individual golds at a single Winter Games since Eric Heiden in 1980.

The defending Olympic champion from 2018 and 2022, Nuis is the most obvious threat to Stolz, as he aims to bring down the curtain on his illustrious career with a final medal. Nuis holds the current Olympic record (1:43.21) and the world record.

The Netherlands will also pose a threat to Stolz as they have a strong contingent, including Joep Wennemars and Tijmen Snel, who are ranked among the top contenders.

Ice hockey: Women's gold medal game

19.20 CET - Milano Santagiulia Ice Hockey Arena

Another chapter in the increasingly bitter rivalry between the two dominant teams in women's hockey, Canada and the USA, will be written on Thursday as they clash in the women's ice hockey final.

The two countries have taken part in six of the seven gold medal matches at the Olympics and met in no less than 23 of 24 finals at the World Championship level. The Canadians claimed their fifth Olympic crown in 2022.

The Americans have dominated the tournament, conceding just a single goal in their opening match against Czechia. Their dominance was evidenced by the fact that they went on to record five shutouts, scoring at least five goals in every game. They won the quarter-final 6-0 against Italy and 5-0 in the semi-finals against Sweden.

After losing to the United States in the preliminary rounds (when they were without the services of captain Marie-Philip Poulin), the reigning Olympic champions Canada beat Germany 5-1 in the quarter-final and then had the better of Switzerland 2-1 in the semi-final.

In the latter match, Poulin managed to break the all-time women's Olympic ice hockey goals record with her 19th and 20th goals in the tournament.
