Saturday, February 21st, 2026 - a date Marijke Groenewoud will never forget. Shortly after the Dutch speed skater won her first Olympic gold medal, the 27-year-old got engaged to her boyfriend.

Marijke Groenewoud dominated Saturday's women's mass start final - the last speed skating event of the 2026 Olympics - and won her country's tenth gold medal of the Milan-Cortina Games, making this the Netherlands' most successful Winter Games ever.

Shortly after the speed skater left the medal ceremony and had spoken to the media, Groenewoud was shocked to see her family and boyfriend on the other side of the tunnel. That's when her boyfriend, Mike Dogterom, got on one knee and popped the question to the newly crowned Olympic champion.

Groenewoud, in shock and happy, said 'yes'.

The Dutchwoman wasn't the first speed skater to get engaged during the Olympic Games in Northern Italy: American Brittany Bowe was proposed to by her girlfriend, ice hockey player Hilary Knight, on Thursday.
