Offensive assistant Mike McCoy will step in as the interim head coach going forward. McCoy is a former head coach of the Los Angeles Chargers (2013-2016). He was also the former offensive coordinator for the 2018 Arizona Cardinals - they finished dead last in both points and yards per game.
Tennessee released the following statement on the firing of Callahan:
The Titans were 3-14 under Callahan last season, leading them to the No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft.
Callahan's firing also comes after what veteran defensive tackle Jeffrey Simmons called "the worst week of practice."
The Titans currently have the worst offence (32nd) in the league and are tied with the winless New York Jets for the league lead in sacks given up (25).
Just a couple of weeks ago, quarterback Cam Ward had some choice words following a 26-0 loss to the Houston Texans.
Ward has thrown for 1,101 yards, three touchdowns, and four interceptions in all six games this season.
His 55.0% completion percentage ranks dead last (34th) among all quarterbacks this season, while his 67.3 passer rating ranks third to last, just behind J.J. McCarthy (67.2) and Joe Flacco (67.0).
In all five of their losses, the Titans have not scored more than 20 points. In their lone win, they scored 22 with the help of a messy fumble by the Arizona Cardinals.
The Titans' next game is on Sunday, October 19th, against the New England Patriots.
