Denmark had every chance to beat Spain in the Davis Cup and make their way to the Final 8 in Bologna, but it all ended in tears for the frustrated Danes in Marbella.
Frederik Lochte Nielsen's men led 2-0 after Saturday's singles, but Spain hit back with three wins on Sunday and thus win 3-2 on aggregate.
In the all-important single in Marbella, Elmer Moller lost 2-6, 3-6 to Pablo Carreno-Busta, who played with greater stability on the day.
Moller handled the pressure of playing the decisive rubber to perfection earlier in the season when Denmark faced Serbia at home but couldn't follow up his impressive win against Jaume Munar on Saturday.
Moller was without a chance in the first set, but began the second set in promising style, where he held serve twice and had two opportunities to break the Spaniard's serve.
However, Moller failed to make the most of his chances, and instead Carreno-Busta broke Moller's serve to make it 4-2, which visibly deflated the Dane.
Denmark had the chance to reach the Davis Cup Final 8 for the first time ever, but instead Spain took the place despite the withdrawal of World No 1, Carlos Alcaraz.
