The match was supposed to have been played in one of the smaller arenas, but was moved to the main stand and Rune and Humbert delivered a great match on the biggest stage, where Rune showed his best tennis in the decisive moments of the game.
In their three previous matches, Rune had never lost a set to Humbert but from the start, Humbert showed desire to change those statistics as he dominated exchanges from the baseline against a passive Dane whose endurance only occasionally produced French mistakes.
Rune struggled with his serve in the beginning of the match but still managed to hold serve until the end of the first set. Rune missed his first two opportunities to break at 5-5, and instead Humbert decided the set in his favor by taking advantage of his seventh break point in total to win the set 7-5.
Rune began the second set with a completely different authority taking control of the match as he raced to a 3-0 lead winning all points in Humbert's service games.
Humbert did manage to reduce the deficit to 2-3 but from then on both players held serve as Rune levelled the score by taking the second set 6-4.
Both players was at their best in the third set showing brilliant tennis but you always had a feeling that Rune could go up a gear which he also did when he broke Humbert's serve at 5-5 and served home the match in clinical fashion.
In the next round Rune faces the in-form Greek contender Stefanos Tsitsipas who is currently ranked nine in the world.
