Elsewhere, second seed Aryna Sabalenka (24) has beaten one of the tournament's brightest sparks, Mirra Andreeva (16) in straight sets 6-3, 6-1.

14:06 CET - Mayar Sherif (26) has continued her fine run of form to defeat Belgian Elise Mertens (27) in three sets, 6-4, 0-6, 6-4.

13:55 CET - Daniil Medvedev (27) has survived a scare to make his way through to the next round in the Spanish capital. He lost the first set to compatriot Alexander Shevchenko (22) 6-4 before wining the next two 6-1, 7-5.

12:54 CET - The first results are coming in from Madrid as Irina-Camelia Begu (32) has seen off Liudmila Samsonova (24) 6-4, 6-4.

8:44 CET - Daria Kasatkina (25) said she is thankful that Russian tennis players are still able to compete in international tournaments while other sports have banned them due to the war in Ukraine.

Tennis, unlike many other sports, did not introduce a blanket ban on players from Russia and its ally Belarus after the invasion, which Moscow calls a "special military operation".

Some sports have recently begun to readmit Russian and Belarusian athletes following recommendations issued by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) last month.

Wimbledon banned players from the two countries last year but said in March it would accept them as neutral athletes.

"I was really sad to miss Wimbledon last year - of course for a reason, but it still was painful," Kasatkina told reporters after beating Ukraine's Lesia Tsurenko at the Madrid Open.

7:33 CET - World number two Carlos Alcaraz (19) said he is looking forward to facing Alexander Zverev (26) at the Madrid Open again, nearly a year after defeating the German in the final of last year's edition.

Alcaraz eased past Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov 6-2 7-5 on Sunday to set up a last-16 showdown with Zverev, who demolished Frenchman Hugo Grenier 6-1 6-0.

The pair met twice during last year's clay swing, with Alcaraz beating Zverev in Madrid to win his second ATP Masters 1000 title before Zverev got his revenge in the French Open quarter-finals a few weeks later.

"I really want to play that match. We played a few times, head-to-head he is up," Alcaraz said.

Maria Sakkari and Paula Badosa match up in an exciting contest before world number one Iga Swiatek wraps up the day with her clash against Ekaterina Alexandrova.

Meanwhile, in the men's tour, Stefanos Tsitsipas will want to protect his title as he faces Sebastian Baez after Taylor Fritz challenges Chilean Cristian Garin.

The day starts with an important match for Russian Daniil Medvedev who faces Alexander Shevchenko as the world number three attempts to improve his clay tournaments record.
