At 34 years old, French cyclist Julian Alaphilippe has decided to end his career, according to information from L'Equipe and Dutch website Wielerfiets.

Alaphilippe will have no farewell tour, retiring with immediate effect.

The world champion in 2020 and 2021 never fully recovered from his crash at Liege-Bastogne-Liege in 2022, which left him with a pneumothorax.

His lack of motivation during the last Tour de France, where he failed to make an impact, was clear.

This marks the end of a major chapter in French cycling.

Alaphilippe won Milan-Sanremo (2019), the Fleche Wallonne three times (2018, 2019, 2021), Strade Bianche (2019), the Klasikoa (2018), and the Grand Prix de Quebec (2015).

Fifth in the Tour in 2019, he wore the Yellow Jersey for a total of 18 days across three editions. He won at least one stage in every Grand Tour.

Always an attacking rider, Alaphilippe always remained one of the French public's favourites along the roadside.
