The summer transfer window has been an utterly astonishing one, shattering the Premier League gross spending record which had stood since 2017. Over £1.5 billion has been spent, with still a few days left of the window.

There have been a number of big-name signings, including Erling Haaland to Manchester City, Gabriel Jesus to Arsenal and Raheem Sterling to Chelsea. Those are all great pieces of business, but what about the players who have gone under the radar? The ones who are set to make a mark but haven't really been mentioned?

It’s not always the most obvious players who have the biggest impact. Some can make a totally unexpected impact in a much more subtle way, and they deserve just as much credit as anyone else.

So let’s take a look at eight of the most underrated Premier League signings of the transfer window.

Romeo Lavia (18)

Manchester City to Southampton - £10.5 million

The tenacious, dynamic midfielder signed for Southampton for quite a substantial fee for someone so young, especially since he had hardly played for Manchester City. That shows just how impressive the young man is.

A powerhouse in midfield capable of dominating in defensive and offensive areas, the Saints have picked up a real prospect who has already taken the place of Oriol Romeu.

The Belgian has been brilliant so far in a Southampton shirt, putting in a magnificent display in his side’s unfortunate 1-0 home loss to Manchester United, and scoring a terrific goal in the 2-1 victory against Chelsea.

His quality passing range has already been an impressive highlight, showcasing his incredible all-round game. Lavia was extremely highly rated by Pep Guardiola, and if he can continue to develop, he will be a fearsome opponent for years to come.

Armel Bella-Kotchap (20)

Bochum to Southampton - £8.5 million

Another young player to move to Southampton, Bella-Kotchap has a lot of experience for a 20-year-old. The centre-back made 74 appearances for Bochum and has nine caps for Germany at Under-21 level.

A real Rolls-Royce, Bella-Kotchap has a stunning mix of pace and power, and has also made a more than impressive start for the Saints. Extremely comfortable on the ball, Southampton have another wonderful youngster on their hands.

Taiwo Awoniyi (25)

Union Berlin to Nottingham Forest - £17.5 million

Nottingham Forest’s record signing, Awoniyi has all the attributes to succeed in the Premier League. He scored 15 goals in 31 games for Union Berlin, and if he can get anywhere near that total here, he will be well worth that money.

As well as being a clinical finisher with a great physique, his work ethic is top-class, epitomised by the fact that he averages 0.95 clearances a game.

Marc Roca (25)

Bayern Munich to Leeds United - £10 million

An astute signing for Leeds, the Spaniard should be a good replacement for Kalvin Phillips. A master at playing in front of the back four, he will fit right into Jesse Marsch’s style of play.

Rarely losing possession, he is often involved with his side’s build-up with such a good passing range. At £10 million, he could prove to be a superb signing for the club.

Nick Pope (30)

Burnley to Newcastle United - £10 million

Not one of Newcastle’s most ‘sexy’ signings, but there’s an argument to be made that he is their best this summer. 48 clean sheets in 145 games for Burnley is an extremely impressive stat for the calibre of club he was at.

The Magpies were crying out for a top-class, proven goalkeeper, and Pope is just that. A huge presence in goal, his shot-stopping has been phenomenal for Burnley for several seasons.

His ability to command his penalty area is brilliant and he will add so much to this Newcastle team. His man of the match performance in their 0-0 draw with Brighton illustrates just that. For that fee, he could be one of the signings of the summer.

Bernd Leno (30)

Arsenal to Fulham - £3 million

For £3 million, Leno is a staggeringly astute signing with plenty of Premier League experience. The German played over 100 games for Arsenal and over 200 for Bayer Leverkusen, so experience is not an issue.

If you want to stay up, having a quality goalkeeper is vital, and Leno has proven himself to be a very good one. He will surely win many points for Fulham.

Emmanuel Dennis (24)

Watford to Nottingham Forest - £20 million

Purely due to the fact that Forest have signed so many players, this one seems to have gone under the radar a bit. Easily Watford’s best player last season, Dennis bagged 10 goals and registered six assists for a poor team who ended up being relegated.

His direct nature and goal-scoring prowess will be invaluable for Forest, and his cameo appearance against Tottenham off the bench was a sign of things to come.

Ben Mee (32)

Burnley to Brentford - Free transfer

A really sound piece of business for Brentford, Mee has a wealth of experience and formed a strong partnership next to James Tarkowski last season.

A leader at the back and a goalscoring threat from corners, Mee is exactly the type of centre-back a manager would love to have. He rarely puts a foot wrong with his clean tackling, he will undoubtedly make Thomas Frank’s side tougher to score against.
