Lazio secured their fifth consecutive H2H win over Hellas Verona with a late OG proving to be the difference as they claimed a 1-0 victory at the Stadio Marc'Antonio Bentegodi.

The visitors dominated possession in the first half, but struggled to maintain any attacking momentum after missing a golden chance four minutes in. Gustav Isaksen showed great persistence to win the ball high up the pitch, and his shot was deflected into the path of Tijjani Noslin, but he headed just over the bar from close range after being put under pressure by Armel Bella-Kotchap.

Hellas’ game plan revolved around resolute defence, springing quick counterattacks as soon as they won the ball, but they failed to create any clear-cut chances and lacked incisiveness in the final third.

Lazio had another chance just before half-time when a free kick was nodded back into the box towards Alessio Romagnoli, but he couldn’t keep his header down, and the players went into the break all square.

The second half continued in a similar fashion, with neither side able to create sustained attacking pressure, although Ivan Provedel had to look alive to deal with a wicked low delivery from Martin Frese with Verona players waiting for a tap-in at the back post.

Going into the final 20 minutes, Maurizio Sarri made changes in an attempt to spark some life into his attack after failing to land any shots on target since the restart. Lorenzo Montipo was finally tested when Adam Marusic took aim with a free-kick from the area, but he was denied by a fine diving stop.

Antoine Bernede then had the best chance of the game for the home side as he was played in down the left, but he ignored the option to pass to a teammate and tamely rolled the ball into the side netting instead.

That moment proved to be crucial as the visitors went straight up the order end to claim the lead with 10 minutes to go. Manuel Lazzari’s shot from a narrow angle did look like it was going to threaten Montipo’s goal, but it took a wicked deflection off Victor Nelsson and looped over the goalkeeper and into the net to secure the win.

The three points also see Lazio end a run of four games without a win in Serie A and puts them within six points of the top six, whilst Hellas Verona are now winless in four and sit three points adrift of safety in 19th position.
