The Premier League’s ultimate surprise package Sunderland are looking to cling on to their pre-round top-four berth when they welcome an Everton side who’ve struggled in recent weeks.

Match News and Current Form

Sunderland have adapted seamlessly to life back in the top-flight after an eight-year absence, with a stirring 2-1 win away at Chelsea last week serving as the marquee result of their stunning campaign so far. The Black Cats’ 17 points from nine matches equals their best-ever tally at this stage of a Premier League season last achieved in 1999/00, when they went on to win their tenth game 4-0 against Bradford! Regis Le Bris will now be targeting Sunderland’s first set of three successive top-flight wins since May 2014, and can take great confidence from their unbeaten start to this league season at the Stadium of Light (W3, D1).

The mood in the Everton camp is more sombre after a run of one win in five Premier League matches (D2, L3), leaving them languishing in the bottom half of the table. Although against stiff competition in Manchester City (2-0) and Tottenham (3-0), two defeats without scoring will concern manager David Moyes, and another setback would see them lose three straight games under his leadership for the first time since 2011. Recent form on the road offers scant encouragement, with the Toffees losing four of their five away games this term (W1), failing to score three times therein.

Head-to-Head History

Sunderland lost both H2Hs in their last Premier League season, and haven’t lost more than two successive league games against Everton since a run of four between 2007 and 2009. Everton have won just two of their last eight league visits to the Stadium of Light (D4, L2).

Hot Stats and Streaks

Eight of Sunderland’s 11 Premier League goals this season came beyond the hour mark.

Sunderland have earned a pre-round league-high seven points from losing positions this term.

Everton have scored 2+ goals in four of the last five H2Hs.

Only two sides have picked up more yellow cards than Everton coming into the round (22).

Key Players to Watch and Missing Players

Wilson Isidor (G4) is hoping to become just the fifth Sunderland player to reach 5+ Premier League goals in ten or fewer appearances here. Standing in his way is Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford, who faces his boyhood club for the first time having made 35 appearances for them before departing in 2017 - he’s kept just two clean sheets for the Toffees so far this term.

Neither side has any fresh injury concerns ahead of this one.

Betting Analysis

Sunderland look to be catching Everton at a good time here, so we fancy a home win with a clean sheet given the visitors’ current attacking woes.
