The Ghana defender comes off the bench in the 81st minute of a crucial 1-0 victory that sends Rayo five points clear of the relegation zone with six games remaining

After 13 long months on the sidelines, Abdul Mumin made his long-awaited return to competitive football on Thursday evening, coming off the bench in the 81st minute as Rayo Vallecano secured a vital 1-0 victory over Espanyol at Estadio de Vallecas.

It was a moment that drew warm applause from the home faithful who had watched Mumin fight every single day to get back to this point.

The result itself carries enormous significance in the context of Rayo's season. The win sends them five points clear of the La Liga relegation zone with just six games left to play.

On a night of massive significance and high emotion, Mumin's return added an extra layer of meaning to an already important three points.

A nightmare that began in March 2025

The road back to Thursday's substitute appearance began in the cruellest of circumstances. On March 31, 2025, Mumin sustained an anterior cruciate ligament injury in a La Liga fixture against Sevilla, forced off in the 35th minute after feeling his knee give way following a challenge.

It was a devastating blow for a player who had been enjoying arguably the finest form of his career, having contributed goals and assists while earning widespread praise as one of Rayo's most consistent performers that season.

The rehabilitation process was long, demanding and, at times, deeply uncertain. Rather than rushing into a standard treatment protocol, Mumin and Rayo took a deliberate and considered approach, consulting specialists and taking the time needed to ensure the knee healed properly.

Months passed. The season ended. A new campaign began. And still Mumin worked, day after day, largely out of sight.

By late 2025, he had returned to individual training on the grass at Rayo's facilities, and in the weeks leading up to Thursday's match, he had been participating in behind-closed-doors friendly matches.

That readiness was confirmed on Thursday night, when coach Íñigo Pérez decided the moment had come to bring him back.

Back where he belongs

When Mumin's number went up in the 81st minute and he stepped off the bench and onto the Vallecas turf, it brought to an end an absence of 418 days.

The crowd showed massive support for the Ghanaian as he was subbed on with his team mates showing appreciation for a player who has gone through a full cycle of a strenous rehabilitation process.

The timing could not have been better from a team perspective either. With Rayo locked in a nervous battle to avoid relegation, every defensive body matters.

Mumin's return gives Perez a reliable, experienced option at centre-back for the final six matches of the season.

Five points clear of the drop zone is a cushion, but not yet a safety net. Six games remain, and in league football, nothing is guaranteed until the mathematics are settled.

Having Mumin available again - even in a limited capacity as he builds back to full fitness - could prove more significant than it might initially appear.

A broader significance for Ghana

Thursday's return also carries implications well beyond Madrid. With the 2026 FIFA World Cup beginning in June and Ghana preparing to face England, Panama and Croatia, the Black Stars' new coach Carlos Queiroz will have been watching Mumin's comeback with considerable interest.

The 27-year-old defender brings La Liga experience, composure on the ball and an aerial presence that Ghana's defensive setup can ill afford to be without.

His contract situation at Rayo remains unresolved, with his deal expiring at the end of June, but for now the most important thing for Mumin, Ghana and any potential future employer is simply the fact that he is back on a football pitch.
