Stuttgart finally ended their woeful run of 23 away Bundesliga games without a win to give themselves a fighting chance of staying in the division thanks to a stunning 3-2 win against relegation rivals Bochum.

It was a proverbial six-pointer at the Vonovia Ruhrstadion with both teams in opposing form. The visitors had taken one point from their last five games, while Bochum were unbeaten in three games. After a 3-0 defeat last time out against Union Berlin, Stuttgart moved swiftly to sack Bruno Labbadia and install former Hoffenheim boss Sebastian Hoeneß, and evidence of the famous ‘new manager bounce’ was on show in the early going as Stuttgart edged ahead inside 15 minutes. Anthony Losilla’s poor clearance fell to Hiroki Ito from the edge of the area, and he provided a rasping finish into the roof of the net.

Bochum had won three out of their last five home games though, and they started to look like a side boasting that record in the latter stages of the first half as they probed for an equaliser. Their best chance fell to Takuma Asano, who could only put his header straight at Fabian Bredlow from close range.

Stuttgart were quick out of the traps once more following the restart, and almost scored another wonder goal when Josha Vagnoman went on a mazy run past four members of Bochum’s backline before forcing Manuel Riemann into a smart save. The visitors were made to pay for not taking that golden chance when shortly afterwards, Enzo Millot pulled down Philipp Förster in his own area and conceded a penalty. Kevin Stöger made no mistake from 12 yards to get the hosts on level terms, but parity wouldn’t last long.

Bochum went to sleep after equalising and deservedly found themselves behind once again just three minutes later when Borna Sosa delivered an assist-of-the-season contender with the outside of his foot, putting it on a plate for Serhou Guirassy to convert. Stuttgart then capped off a crazy six-minute period that saw three goals with a redemption assist for Millot, who supplied a wonderful cross onto the head of Vagnoman, who netted his first Bundesliga goal to give the visitors a two-goal advantage.

Stuttgart had Bredlow to thank for denying Bochum a route back into the game when he brilliantly denied Gerrit Holtmann's fantastic effort with over 20 minutes remaining. However, Philipp Hofmann ensured there’d be a nervy finish to the game for Stuttgart when he latched onto Förster’s low cross, halving the deficit with just five minutes left to play.

Silas Katompa Mvumpa should have put the game to bed for Stuttgart when he missed a one-on-one in stoppage time, but he wasn't punished as Stuttgart held on to climb off the bottom of the Bundesliga table and move within three points of Bochum.
