Two first-half goals, each coming from loan signings, set the foundation for a 3-0 Salernitana victory over Sassuolo at the Stadio Arechi, with the result marking only Paulo Sousa’s second victory since taking the Granata hot seat.

Knowing what is still at stake, Salernitana did wonders for their chances of securing a third straight top-flight season just eight minutes.

A short corner was played to a lurking Norbert Gyömbér level with the back post. His flicked header found Lorenzo Pirola onside from just a matter of yards out, and Andrea Consigli could only parry the Inter loanee’s header into the net to give the Granata a dream start.

Salernitana had started the weekend with just one win at home against sides starting Friday above them, but they thoroughly ridiculed that statistic by doubling their advantage in the 20th minute.

Erik Botheim found Boulaye Dia inside the area, and the Senegalese hitman fired first-time past a bewildered Consigli, registering his 11th strike of the season.

For their part, Sassuolo regrouped, but with the visitors landing just one shot on target before half-time, something drastic would be needed to alter the destination of the points.

Despite the attack-minded deployment of Andrea Pinamonti in place of Davide Frattesi, that theme continued after the break with Grigoris Kastanos blazing just over the bar. That aside, the game settled into a lull, with no second-half shots on target by the hour mark as Salernitana looked to complete their mission for revenge after losing the reverse fixture 5-0.

And that is exactly what the Granata did soon after the clock hit 65 minutes, giving themselves a three-goal lead for the first time since January via some more African ingenuity.

Some questionable defending allowed a succession of passes into the area from the right flank, and Villarreal loanee Dia was once more instrumental, playing the ball back for a lurking Lassana Coulibaly, who fired in with a side-footed finish to put the three points beyond all doubt.

In the end, Sassuolo were a well-beaten side, and looked nothing like the brave warriors that had scored nine total away goals against top-four contenders AS Roma and AC Milan earlier this season.

They remain stuck in mid-table, with their hopes of European football surely in tatters now, while Salernitana can now start to relax just a bit more, as they are guaranteed to end the weekend seven points clear of danger.
