Kwon is ranked 350th in the world, but injuries and military service have kept him from maintaining a high position in the world rankings.
Five years ago, he was ranked 52nd in the world, and now he is trying to work his way back up. The tournament win on home soil will propel him about 100 places up the rankings when the list is published tomorrow.
A place in the final will move Holmgren up to about 163rd in the world.
The Dane was broken at 1-2 in the first set and was nowhere near breaking back.
In the second set, both players held serve until the end. Leading 5-4, Holmgren achieved his first break point, which also happened to be a set point, but he failed to capitalize on it.
Instead, Kwon broke serve to lead 6-5 and subsequently served home the win.
It was the first time that Holmgren managed to reach a final since last summer.
