The Scot has lost 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 to Fabio Fognini (35) to go out in the first round as he did in Monte Carlo and Madrid.
21:55 CET - Working to get back to full fitness, Brandon Nakashima (21) has made a poor start to the year and that has continued in the Eternal City with Gregoire Barrere (29) beating him 6-3, 6-3.
On the women's side, Karolina Muchova (26), Alize Cornet (33) and Claire Liu (22) have all advanced.
20:35 CET - Roman Safiullin (25) is through in Rome, after beating Marcos Giron (29) 6-4, 6-3 whilst Sorana Cirstea (33) is also through, after seeing off Katie Volynets (21) 2-6, 6-3, 6-4.
Elsewhere, Danka Kovinic (28) also needed three sets to progress. The Montonegran battled to a 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 victory over Lucia Bronzetti (24).
19:50 CET - In an all-Australian match-up, Alexei Popyrin (23) has beaten Christopher O'Connell (28) in straight sets, 6-2, 7-6.
Fellow Aussie Thanasi Kokkinakis (27) has also progressed with Jaume Munar (26) having to retire through injury.
18:21 CET - The WTA Flashmoment of the day comes courtesy of Elisabetta Cocciaretto (22) who held serve with two excellent backhands.

17:30 CET - Lesia Tsurenko (33) has beaten former world number three and compatriot Elina Svitolina (28) in straight sets, winning 6-4, 6-3.
16:46 CET - Former British number one Kyle Edmund (28), trying to get back to his best after struggling with injuries, went out in the first round in Madrid and has suffered the same fate in Rome, losing 6-1, 6-3 to qualifier Alexandre Muller (26).
15:35 CET - More results in Rome as Italian Elisabetta Cocciaretto (22) beat Lauren Davis (29) 6-3, 6-0 to give some cheer for the home fans.
15:23 CET - Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova (31) continued her injury comeback with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Sara Errani (36) in Rome.
15:13 CET - Seville will host the 2023 Billie Jean King Cup Finals, the International Tennis Federation announced on Wednesday.
The showpiece women's team event, featuring 12 nations, will take place from November 7-12.
It is the first time since 2008 that Spain has hosted the finals of the competition, known until 2020 as the Fed Cup.
Last season's winners Switzerland will be joined by runners-up Australia and wildcard pick Poland as well as the nine nations that came through the recent qualifiers - hosts Spain, Canada, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Italy, Kazakhstan, Slovenia and the United States.

14:47 CET - Two Argentine successes in Rome on the ATP side of the tournament with both Tomas Martin Etcheverry (23) and Sebastian Baez (22) both through to the next round in straight sets. Luca van Assche (18) was taken down by Etcheverry 7-6, 6-3 whilst Baez beat Juan Pablo Varillas (27) 7-5, 6-3.
14:30 CET - Marton Fucsovics (31) has got his campaign in Rome off to the perfect start with a straight-set 6-4, 6-2 victory over Filip Krajinovic (31).
14:06 CET - Sloane Stephens (30) is the next player into the next round - the US star was in dominant form against Nadia Podoroska (26), winning the contest 6-4, 6-1.
13:58 CET - Rain in Rome delayed the start of the day but we have our first results from both the ATP and WTA tournaments. Stan Wawrinka (38) has beaten Ilya Ivashka (29) 6-2, 6-4 whilst Tatjana Maria (35) is out, having been seen off by Hungarian Anna Bondar (25) 6-4, 6-1. Meanwhile, Ana Bogdan (30) is through to the next round after defeating Nao Hibino (28) 7-5, 6-0.
8:43 CET - World number three Daniil Medvedev (27) said he wants to focus on playing more spin and sharpen his slide to develop his game on clay as he gears up for Italian Open this week.
Medvedev has previously described himself as a "hard court specialist", having won 18 of his 19 titles, including the 2021 US Open, on hard courts.
The Russian, known for his flat groundstrokes and all-court coverage, arrives in Rome on the back of a quarter-final exit at the Monte Carlo Masters and a last-16 defeat in Madrid.
Asked about what he has to do in order to play good tennis on clay, Medvedev told reporters on Tuesday: "Play definitely some more spin. Especially the sliding, I think the sliding was always a problem.

7:36 CET - Jannik Sinner (21) said he is now playing with a different mindset and is not afraid to predict he can win the "big, big matches" as the Italian returns to the court in front of his home fans in Rome this week.
Sinner withdrew from the Barcelona Open quarter-finals last month due to illness and skipped the Madrid Open the following week, but he said he is fully fit for the Italian Open.
Seeded eighth seed in Rome, Sinner reached the quarters last year for the first time and he is aiming to go the distance this time around.
"I have a different mindset now," he told the ATP website on Tuesday. "I'm not scared to say that I can win big, big matches. I'm here, I can do it. But in another way, you have to have the right respect for every single player.

7:29 CET - World number three Jessica Pegula (29) has criticised Madrid Open organisers after the American and her fellow women's doubles finalists were not allowed to make speeches at the trophy ceremony.
Pegula and Coco Gauff lost the women's doubles final 6-1 6-4 to Victoria Azarenka and Beatriz Haddad Maia on Sunday and none of the players were given the chance to address the audience.
The men's doubles finalists were allowed to do so following their match a day earlier.
"What happened in Madrid, it was really disappointing. I had a feeling something was going to happen," Pegula told reporters on Tuesday ahead of the Italian Open.

Another experienced player appearing today will be Swiss Stan Wawrinka who kicks off the day with a match against Ilya Ivashka.
Thanasi Kokkinakis has just played his first quarter-final of the year last week and would be aiming to repeat the feat or beyond as he takes on Spaniard Jaume Munar.
Meanwhile, in the WTA version, the second day of the tournament is coming in as Paula Badosa continues to redeem her form this year. This time trying her luck against Anna-Lena Friedsam.
