Early-season Bundesliga high-flyers Freiburg have hit form again ahead of matchday nine, which sees them host a struggling Union Berlin side who look set to be in a relegation battle this term.
Match News and Current Form
Freiburg have responded to three consecutive competitive defeats by winning their next three, beating Wolfsburg in the DFB-Pokal (3-2), Augsburg in the Bundesliga (2-1) and Trabzonspor in the UEFA Conference League (1-0). Sat in the top four with 16 points on the board (W5, D1, L2), this is their second-best start to a Bundesliga campaign ever, and they appear well-placed to challenge the club’s all-time best third-place finish achieved back in 1994/95. Julian Schuster’s side are, however, at risk of suffering back-to-back home defeats for the first time since April, when ominously, Union were responsible for one of those losses.
Union conceded late on to draw 1-1 at home with Cologne last weekend, and though that result extended their unbeaten run to four league games (W1, D3), Die Eisernen have just seven points on the board (W1, D4, L3), only once previously posting fewer at this stage of a Bundesliga campaign. Summer appointment Mauro Lustrinelli remains under pressure as his side occupy the relegation play-off spot pre-round, and things don’t get any easier on the road here, with Union starting the round having collected the third-fewest away points (nine) of any ever-present Bundesliga side in 2026 (W2, D3, L8).
Head-to-Head History
Union are unbeaten in the last seven meetings (W4, D3), but Freiburg’s four prior H2H league wins have all come on home soil.

Hot Stats and Streaks
Eleven of Freiburg’s 15 matches this term saw both teams score.
Pre-round, Freiburg have scored the most headed goals in the Bundesliga this season (five).
Five of Union’s seven league goals this term came from set-pieces.
Union received the second-most yellow cards across the first eight rounds of this Bundesliga season (22).
Key Players to Watch and Missing Players
Freiburg defender Matthias Ginter has only won two of his 12 Bundesliga H2Hs against Union (D5, L5), although six of his last seven league goals came at home. Zeno Van Den Bosch has been booked in four of his eight starts since his summer arrival at Union, three of which came after half-time.
Freiburg trio Patrick Osterhage, Berkay Yılmaz and Bruno Ogbus are all nearing returns. Union remain without Felix Uduokhai through suspension.

Betting Analysis
Freiburg are heavily favoured, but on the back of Thursday evening’s European exploits in Turkey, a slow start which leads to a half-time draw here seems viable.
