McDavid could've demanded a contract of around $20 million per year.
By comparison, it's only been a few days since the not-so-successful Kirill Kaprizov signed an eight-year deal with Minnesota, boasting an average salary of $17 million. Given that, it was widely expected that the Russian forward's contract would be surpassed by McDavid's new deal.
However, McDavid has shown that winning the Stanley Cup is worth more than a big salary to him.
"Connor's dedication to our team and city is surpassed only by his extraordinary efforts to bring the Stanley Cup back to Edmonton Oilers fans," said general manager Stan Bowman.
The Oilers captain and 2015 No. 1 overall draft pick, along with Leon Draisaitl, is at the peak of his powers and wants to do everything he can to claim his dream trophy in the next two years.
Although McDavid is only 28 years old, he has already played 712 games in the NHL, scoring 1082 points (361goals, 721 assists). A further 96 games and 150 points (44 goals, 106 assists) have come in the playoffs.
During his career, in which he has worn only an Edmonton jersey, he has won numerous individual awards, including the Hart Trophy three times and the Ted Lindsay Award four times.
