We knew it, but he had not yet said anything publicly, Franck Ribery has published a message on Twitter announcing his retirement from football. At 39, the French international with 81 caps leaves an indelible mark on the history of this sport.

Some will remember the dark phase of his career, football fans will remember his achievements forever. From his goal against Spain in 2006 to his last Bundesliga title with Bayern Munich, Franck Ribery has left a lasting impression on the French and perhaps even more so on the Germans.

He had been playing for Salernitana since last season, but repeated injuries convinced him to hang up his boots. As expected, the 2012-2013 Champions League winner posted a message on Twitter, accompanied by a video recalling the highlights of his career. It's a page that's been turned and what's certain is that Ribery has definitely gone down in history.
