Denmark edged closer to qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup despite a disappointing 2-2 at home to Belarus, who picked up their first point in Group C and ended a run of five consecutive losses

Aiming to qualify for a third consecutive World Cup for the first time, Denmark came close in the early exchanges when Andreas Christensen met Gustav Isaksen’s corner and narrowly headed over, before the home side made their pressure tell in the 11th minute.

Mikkel Damsgaard pounced on a loose ball and unleashed a strike from 25 yards, which flew past Fedor Lapoukhov and nestled in the bottom corner.

The Red & Whites were keen to press home their advantage, but Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg was not as accurate as his teammate when trying his luck from range midway through the half, before Isaksen and Damsgaard both forced saves from the visiting goalkeeper from promising positions.

Belarus finally threatened when Kiryl Pyachenin hammered an effort into the side netting from close range, and though Isaksen narrowly missed the target with a well-struck volley, the visitors finished the half well, as Nikita Demchenko forced Kasper Schmeichel into a smart stop.

The reverse fixture ended 6-0 to the Danes, but after Isaksen was again denied by Lapoukhov, a repeat scoreline was ruled out after the hour mark when the ball fell kindly at the edge of the area for Valery Gromyko, who did well to evade the Danish defence and fire an equaliser past Schmeichel.

Within moments of the restart, Nikita Demchenko looked to have passed up the best chance to put Belarus in front when he struck the post, but with just over a quarter of the match to play, he latched onto a hopeful ball into the box from Gromyko and guided home a shock second for The White Wings.

Looking to get out of trouble, Brian Riemer’s side turned to Patrick Dorgu on the left, who set up Damsgaard for what would have been his second had Lapoukhov not made an impressive reaction save.

But the Manchester United man kept plugging away, and his next centre made its way to Isaksen, who curled the ball out of the goalkeeper’s reach to draw level.

Dorgu flashed a late chance over as Denmark threw everything at Belarus, but the team ranked 103rd in the world held on for an unlikely point. Despite dropping points, Scotland’s loss to Greece sees Denmark go a point clear with one match to play.
