As Mohamed Salah (32) approaches the final six months of his contract, there is a growing concern among Liverpool supporters that the Egyptian will leave Anfield at the end of the season.

Having seen legendary manager Jurgen Klopp depart in the summer and Arne Slot step into the hot seat, a period of transition was expected at Liverpool this season.

However, it's been quite the opposite so far, with Salah spearheading a magnificent start to the Dutchman's tenure on Merseyside.

The Reds are five points clear at the Premier League summit after just 11 games while the Egyptian tops the charts for direct goal involvements (eight goals, six assists).

As his influence both on and off the pitch remains unrivalled and the records continue to tumble, Salah has undoubtedly cemented his legacy as one of the Premier League’s greatest-ever players.

He might not capture the imagination of football supporters or be as easy on the eye as the likes of Thierry Henry or Eden Hazard but there can be no denying his ruthless efficiency in the final third.

Only seven players in Premier League history have netted more goals than the talismanic Egyptian, who has won the Golden Boot on three separate occasions: 2017/18, 2018/19 and 2021/22.

Furthermore, the winger has picked up several pieces of silverware during his seven-and-a-half years on Merseyside, including the club's first Premier League title and a sixth Champions League crown.

Despite his long list of achievements at the club, Salah could well leave Liverpool for free at the end of the season if a suitable contract can't be agreed on by both parties.

With that in mind, Flashscore has taken a closer look at Salah's revered status at Anfield and why he remains such an invaluable asset to the Reds, even in his mid-30s.

Guarantee of goals

Salah arrived at Liverpool in the summer of 2017 with a point to prove, having failed to make his mark at Chelsea under the tutelage of Jose Mourinho in 2014.

Fresh from a 19-goal season at Roma, the Egyptian carried his form and confidence into a memorable debut campaign with the Reds, scoring 44 times across all competitions including a then-record 32 goals in the Premier League.

That was a sign of things to come as Salah won a second successive Golden Boot the following year, making a mockery of the 'one-season wonder' tag bestowed on him by rival supporters.

The legendary winger has reached the 20-goal mark in each of his seven full seasons at Liverpool, taking his overall tally to a remarkable 221 goals from 366 matches.

It's also worth noting that several of those strikes have arrived in the the biggest matches against the very best opposition, including Manchester United (15 goals), Manchester City (11) and Arsenal (10).

From long-range curlers to sensational solo strikes, few players in world football can boast a more impressive catalogue of goals than Salah.

Having already hit double figures this season, he remains Liverpool's most prolific attacker and an indispensable part of Slot's preferred lineup.

Averaging a goal or assist every 67.5 minutes since the Dutchman's arrival, Salah sits top of all the key attacking metrics for the Reds, making it all the more alarming that his contract has a little over six months to run.

Standard setter

Goals aren't the only currency that have helped propel Salah to superstar status during his time at Liverpool.

Fiercely competitive on matchday and a stickler for discipline on the training ground, the Egyptian acts as the ultimate role model, setting the standards for everyone else in the dressing room to follow.

Whether it's leading by example in the pre-season fitness tests or sharing his wisdom with Liverpool's latest crop of youngsters, Salah leaves no stone unturned in his pursuit of success and silverware.

“Mo is incredibly professional, he’s really the first in (training) and very, very often the last out of all the players," said former Reds boss Klopp back in 2021.

Salah's drive to remain at the top for as long as possible should see him flourish well into his 30s, with Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Luka Modric all proving in recent years that age has no limits when you're the best in class.

Modric won the Ballon d'Or at 33, Messi led Argentina to World Cup glory at 35 and Ronaldo returned to the Premier League with Manchester United at 37, scoring 24 goals across the 2021/22 season.

With Salah still in exemplary shape as well as showing no signs of slowing down in terms of his output, he'll certainly fancy his chances of enjoying a similar degree of longevity whether that's at Liverpool or elsewhere.

One of a kind

Given Salah's legendary status at the club, it promises to be nigh-on impossible for the Reds to find a fitting replacement should he leave in the summer.

Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, Jarrod Bowen and Rodrygo - all linked to Liverpool in the past - would likely cost in excess of £50 million, while slightly cheaper options such as Johan Bakayoko and Antoine Semenyo have yet to prove themselves on the biggest stage.

Therein lies the problem for Liverpool, who find themselves in a tricky position following a period of upheaval behind the scenes.

Recent reports suggest the Reds are in early talks with Salah over a new deal, but with captain Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold also out of contract in the summer, it looks increasingly unlikely that all three will stay at the club.

The Egyptian's hand has undoubtedly strengthened in recent months and his impressive run of form has even led some supporters to plead with owners FSG over offering him a new deal.

Worryingly for the Reds though, Salah is free to speak with other clubs from the start of January, so the onus is on Liverpool to put a serious offer on the table before it's too late.

Interest will be high for the talismanic winger, and with several of Europe's elite sure to be vying for his signature, it's imperative he isn't snapped up by a direct rival.

Salah has given his all to Liverpool over the years, now it's time for the club to repay the favour.
