What is Match Momentum?
Simply put: Momentum illustrates the flow and dynamics of the game. It shows which team is more dominant in particular phases and which has a higher probability of scoring a goal.
It is calculated using a data model from Opta (Stats Perform), which evaluates every event during ball possession.
Each action is assigned a value based on whether it decreases or increases the chance of scoring. These values are summed within each minute played and compared between the two teams. The graph then shows the output for the team that has the higher Momentum value in that segment.
The aim of Match Momentum is to capture even the phases of play that precede the creation of a chance. Unlike the well-known xG (expected goals) model, Momentum is not dependent only on shots — it evaluates the entire game comprehensively.
How to interpret it?
Thanks to the simple visualization of the underlying data, Match Momentum is very easy to read. Each bar represents one minute of play. Taller bars mean a higher probability of scoring for the given team. A series of taller bars for one team indicates that this team is dominating that part of the game and has the potential to create more dangerous situations.
How often is Match Momentum updated during a match?
If you are watching the match live, Match Momentum will update automatically after each minute played.
Where can I see Match Momentum?
Momentum is available in the detail of each match — on the main tab, in the “Statistics” section. Both on the web and in the Android and iOS apps.
In which sports and competitions can I find it?
Match Momentum is a football-specific feature. In its pilot phase, it is currently available for the following competitions: the English Premier League, the Slovak Niké liga, the Czech Chance Liga, and the Peruvian Liga 1. The number will grow quickly. From January 2026, Match Momentum will be available for more than 300 football competitions.
