Goal-shy Newcastle are looking to inject some energy into their Premier League campaign when they host title-chasing Arsenal, who already have ground to make up on the leaders.
Match News and Current Form
Entertainment has been sorely lacking from Newcastle’s matches in the Premier League this term, with their five outings producing a joint-low six total goals, five of which came in their defeat to Liverpool last month. Problems up front extend beyond the loss of Alexander Isak and into last season as the Magpies have now failed to score in five of their last seven league games (W1, D3, L3), while they already sit four points worse off than the same stage last term. Eddie Howe’s side at least remain defensively sound, keeping four clean sheets in the league while facing fewer shots than any other side after five rounds (37).
Arsenal came away from their last league outing with the familiar sinking feeling of a missed opportunity, as they could only draw 1-1 with Manchester City despite being on the front foot for large periods. Mikel Arteta’s pride in their performance does little to compensate for a pre-round deficit to leaders Liverpool of five points at this early stage. The Gunners will be confident of a return to winning ways on the road where they’ve lost once in 16 league outings (W8, D7), but that came in their last trip against Liverpool, while alarmingly their only two sets of successive away league defeats since May 2022 saw the second loss come at Newcastle!
Head-to-Head History
Newcastle have won the last three H2Hs at St James’ Park without conceding, and could win four in a row for the first time since August 1969!
