Newcastle welcome José Mourinho’s Benfica to St James’ Park in this UEFA Champions League (UCL) clash looking to find the consistency that’s been lacking thus far this term.

Match News and Current Form

Newcastle bounced back from their 2-1 defeat to Barcelona on UCL matchday one by beating Union Saint-Gilloise 4-0 on the road, and they’re once again looking for a reaction after losing 2-1 to Brighton in the Premier League on Saturday. Stringing victories together is proving elusive for the Magpies, who also haven’t won two consecutive UCL fixtures since February 2003. Repeating that feat could prove difficult for Eddie Howe’s side given that their 2-0 win over Nottingham Forest means they’ve alternated between wins and losses in their six home fixtures this term (W3, L3).

Benfica don't come into this fixture in great form either, as the Portuguese side have won just two of their last five games (D2, L1) and have started their UCL league-phase campaign with narrow defeats to Qarabağ (3-2) and Chelsea (1-0). As much-travelled head coach Mourinho prepares for another match against familiar opponents, Friday’s 2-0 win against Chaves ought to act as a confidence-booster for the two-time European Cup winners, especially as it came away from home, but it’s worth noting that the Eagles have also lost their last two UCL proper fixtures on the road.

Head-to-Head History

Benfica are unbeaten in both previous H2Hs (W1, D1), coming out on top in the Europa League quarter-final in 2012/13, but have only won one of their last nine European away games against English opponents (D3, L5). Newcastle are winless across their last five games against Portuguese opposition (D3, L2).
